The San Ysidro-Tijuana border crossing in California, for instance, is the world’s busiest: It’s an entry point to a binational region with a gross annual product of more than $220 billion, according to data from UC San Diego’s Center for U.S.-Mexican Studies. Every day, it is traversed by approximately 63,000 pedestrians, 120,000 passenger vehicles and 6,000 trucks.Fonna Forman of UC San Diego’s Cross-Border Initiative, told me. “We have always believed that the wall, and the border region more generally, is a site of cultural, artistic and architectural experimentation. And in this sense, it is a laboratory for border region development across the globe.”“There is obviously a lot of fear and uncertainty in the border communities in which we work,” Forman told me.Ruxandra Guidi

DHS estimates that of the 45 million immigrants who entered the U.S. by air or by sea on tourist or business visas that expired in 2015, roughly 416,500 were still living in the country in 2016. That’s excluding those who entered via land boundaries—DHS did not release that data—so, the total number of visa overstays in 2016 is likely much higher. (By comparison, between2011 and 2016, at the southern border ranged from 328,000 to 479,000 per year.) Politico

It feels like Democrats are walking away with nothing more than another empty promise. We are really disappointed that the Democrats pretty much caved in,We really were hoping for a clean DREAM Act to pass i am disappointed to see lives of immigrant youths being used as bargaining chips. The fact is that every single day, we have DACA beneficiaries that are losing their status, and it creates essentially a domino effect for them If they don't have access to documents, they can't make it to school, they can't make it to work." Activists are returning to the streets a year after a million people rallied worldwide at marches for female empowerment, hoping to create an enduring political movement that will elect more women to government office.ast year, for example, an estimated 175,000 people descended on Boston Common. This year, Massachusetts organizers coordinated 16 separate events across the state, from panel discussions and film screenings to activism training in places ranging from the university city of Cambridge to the fishing hub of New Bedford."We weren't going to be satisfied by repeating merely what we did on Boston Common last year," said Karen Cosmas, one of the coordinators. "It's time to show that what we've done has evolved over the past year into something more action-oriented.""Last year, we marched. This year, we're putting our numbers to action," said Emma Collum, a Fort Lauderdale, Fla., lawyer who is an organizer of "Power to the Polls," an event scheduled for Sunday in Las Vegas. It is meant to kick off a national voter-registration tour of swing states , organizers say. WSJ

Happy Birthday Dr. King !

African American  woman in America has a higher chance of dying during or right after pregnancy than a woman in developing areas of Central Europe or Eastern Asia. What’s more, what Williams had to go through is especially revealing about the medical bias faced by black women.According to American College of Obstetrics and gynecology, at least 46% of maternal deaths among African- American women could be prevented (versus 33% for white women), which points to a systematic dismissal of symptoms and patient complaints, and less attention paid overall. Indeed, how race bias affects the medical profession is well documented.Indeed, even Serena Williams, whose body, as her husband correctly notes, “is one of the greatest things on this planet,” is just another black woman when it comes to being heard in the maternity ward—and when it comes to being dismissed.

“African-American doctors, lawyers, business executives, and they still have a higher infant-mortality rate than…white women who never went to high school in the first place,” Michael Lu
