Small-town Alaska mayor Scott McAdams has won the Democratic nomination for U.S. Senate.

But the tough part will lie ahead, with McAdams facing a tough bid to upset the Republican winner, Joe "Gunner" Miller or Lisa Murkowski.

While many of the candidates were gathering in Anchorage for the election results, McAdams was in his southeast Alaska hometown, Sitka, presiding over an assembly meeting.

Scott spent his elementary years in Petersburg, and spent his young adult years working as a commercial fishing deckhand around the state. He credits these years as instilling an appreciation for hard work, as well as a deep admiration for Alaska's commercial fishing heritage.
