  • 2018 Farm Bill
Rep. Collin Peterson, D-Minn., was one of the main architects of the Agriculture Improvement Act of 2018 as he served as the ranking member of the House Agriculture Committee. In a statement Wednesday afternoon, Peterson pointed out improvements for dairy farmers and permanent funding for Local Food & Farmers Market Promotion Program, Value-Added Producer Grants, the BFRDP Program, Organic Research and the Section 2501 Outreach Program.
"As I said in my floor speech, rural America is facing so many challenges and this bill goes a long way toward providing needed certainty to farmers and ranchers," Peterson said. "I encourage President Trump to sign the farm bill into law quickly."

  • Work or Die Medicaid in Kentucky
Recent claims of a “shortfall” in the budget for Medicaid benefits – an unwarranted alarm based on a misrepresentation of budget numbers – are further undercut by the fact that Medicaid enrollment is falling. Between January and September of 2018, total Medicaid enrollment fell by 96,634 people, or 6.7 percent.
Not only has enrollment been steadily dropping over the past eight months, but enrollment is below what the state had projected and used in its cost estimates. In the budget, the state thought Medicaid enrollment would average 1,427,045 in fiscal year (FY) 2019. As of September, there were 1,336,455 people enrolled in Medicaid – approximately 90,600 or 6.3 percent fewer than expected for an average month in FY 2019.Kentucky Center for Economic Policy

  • Good Did Not Win in Mississippi
Despite the controversy that has roiledhercampaign for the past three weeks, Cindy Hyde-Smith has won the race for Mississippi’s Senate seat, overtaking Democrat Mike Espy, according to NBC News and the New York Times.
The victory for Hyde-Smith, who has been serving in the Senate since she was appointed to replace Sen. Thad Cochran in April, was narrower than it might have been under different circumstances. Though her campaign stuck to a classic Mississippi Republican playbook, the candidate was plagued by gaffes, to put it mildly, which led to an underwhelming margin during the special election Tuesday.
