  • Labour Day 2016
Beginning in the late 19th century, as the trade union and labor movements grew, trade unionists proposed that a day be set aside to celebrate labor. "Labor Day" was promoted by the Central Labor Union and the Knights of Labor, which organized the first parade in New York City. In 1887, Oregon was the first state of the United States to make it an official public holiday. By the time it became an official federal holiday in 1894, thirty U.S. states officially celebrated Labor Day.WP

  • Donald Trump in Mexico
The former president Vicente Fox, who has frequently criticised Trump for his conduct towards Mexicans, .There’s no turning back, Trump, your insults to Mexicans, Muslims and others have dropped you into the hole where you find yourself today. Goodbye, Trump!”Peña Nieto might achieve is still uncertain. Telling off Trump might score him some short-term political points, pundits say – though the president tends to talk in off-scripted statements and in a stiff prose, heavy on protocol, which doesn’t lend itself to strong comments or verbal jousting.“[He’s] become a propaganda tool for the country’s worst enemy,” wrote Jesús Silva Herzog, a political analyst, adding: “No. This isn’t a calculated risk. It’s monumental stupidity. There’s no way this will work out well.” Guardian
Donald Trump clarified his views on immigration in a speech Wednesday in Phoenix, saying the country needs a wall on the southern border, extra agents patrolling it and an aggressive system to urgently expel 2 million immigrants with criminal ties he envisions a revamped system that accepts only people likely to thrive and love their new country. The Republic

  • Colin Kaepernick All-American Hero
As I write this twenty years later, I cannot stand and sing the anthem. I cannot salute the flag; I know that I am a black man in a white world. In 1972, in 1947, at my birth in 1919, I know that I never had it made.Jackie Robinson
"I have great respect for men and women that have fought for this country," Kaepernick said. "I have family. I have friends that gone and fought for this country. They fight for freedom. They fight for the people. They fight for liberty and justice for everyone. And that's not happening. People are dying in vain because this country isn't holding their end of the bargain up as far as, you know, giving freedom and justice and liberty to everybody.NFL.com
What should horrify Americans is not Kaepernick’s choice to remain seated during the national anthem, but that nearly 50 years after Ali was banned from boxing for his stance and Tommie Smith and John Carlos’s raised fists caused public ostracization and numerous death threats, we still need to call attention to the same racial inequities. Failure to fix this problem is what’s really un-American here.Kareem Abdul-Jabbar

  • President Obama Goes Door to Door in Louisiana Flood Areas
President Obama said Louisiana's plight would not be forgotten as he deflected criticism that his visit could be seen as political in nature. He promised a swift and thorough response from the federal government. But he did say that there wasn't enough money to address long-term repairs and to reduce the chances of future disasters.More than 60,000 homes have been damaged by the days-long flood. Obama said more than 100,000 people had applied for disaster aid and that FEMA had already spent $127 million responding to the crisis. LOAJ
