  • California GOP and the Latino Vote
Republican in every presidential election but one from 1952 to 1988 and leading a national movement against taxes, California has become the crown jewel of the Democratic presidential map. Every statewide official is currently a Democrat, and the party holds wide majorities in the legislature even as Republicans have made statehouse gains in blue states like Wisconsin and Michigan under President Obama. One key factor in the shift: A political awakening among the state’s Hispanic voters, who flocked to the polls to combat an anti-immigrant campaign with parallels to GOP front-runner Donald Trump’s current run.n 1994, Republican Gov. Pete Wilson ran for re-election alongside ballot measure Proposition 187, which barred undocumented immigrants from government services. Proposition 187 passed easily and Wilson succeeded in his bid, but the long-term damage proved severe. Latino voter registration soared and the new voters who hit the polls were solidly Democratic. The trend spilled over into national politics as well: Hispanic turnout surged in 1996 and exit polls pegged President Bill Clinton’s share at 75%.MSNBC
Mr. Bush won more than 40% of the Hispanic vote in 2004, yet eight years later Mitt Romney would win only 27% of this fast-growing group—a percentage that Mr. Trump apparently thinks is far too high. Recent history shows that Hispanics are swing voters in national elections who have been driven into the arms of Democrats over the past decade because GOP rhetoric has made them feel unwanted WSJ

Florida Senator Marco Rubio is now inthird at 13%, while support for retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson has fallen to 9%. Donald Trump, increasingly facing pressure from GOP rival Ted Cruz, raised questions Tuesday about the Texas senator’s Canadian birth and whether it would hurt the party’s chances if he were its nominee.“Republicans are going to have to ask themselves the question: ‘Do we want a candidate who could be tied up in court for two years?’ That’d be a big problem,”LATimes
the state of many of Los Angeles County's 44,000 homeless people Tuesday: The streets were a miserable place to be as El Niño storms made their ferocious debut.People clung to steep embankments and under narrow overhangs, or zipped themselves into tents on soupy pavement. Officials were concerned that roughly 600 to 700 homeless people were still camped out Monday in dangerous areas on the Los Angeles River.

  • Guns in America
“The gun lobby may be holding Congress hostage right now, but they can’t hold America hostage,Congress still needs to act. The folks in this room will not rest until Congress does.” Preisdent Obama
To deal with our impoverished neighborhoods, it isn’t enough to get rid of the guns. The public squalor of our inner cities has to be addressed: schools modernized, affordable housing built, mass transit supplied, available jobs created. Dealing with entrenched poverty costs real money, but less than we spend on the police, jails, drugs, alcoholism, and chronic illness — the dysfunction that comes from poverty.Today’s politicians don’t want to spend political capital on guns or fiscal capital on poverty. They’d rather pay more on the back end from failing to act than risk the up-front political and economic costs of dealing with the problems. So the war on guns is lost; the war on poverty abandoned. And the hopes of millions are dashed by that failure. In the circus of the current presidential campaign, these are two fundamental challenges that ought to be at the center of our debate. • Fear in Black
Prosecutors said "Tamir was big for his age — 5-foot-7 and 175 pounds, with a men's XL jacket and size-36 pants — and could have easily passed for someone much older," according to the Los Angeles Times. They cited "unnamed associates" of the 12-year-old who said Tamir was known to pull his toy gun out "like a robber." The language echoes statements given by the responding police officers, who said they believed the boy was much older than 12.To some social science researchers, these characterizations would not come as a surprise. Rice is black. And research published last year by the American Psychological Association found "evidence that black boys are seen as older and less innocent and that they prompt a less essential conception of childhood than do their white same-age peers." In other words, people tend to think of black boys as bigger and older than they actually are.WP
