Your Obligation to Assimilate (and Help Others to Do So) as a New U.S. Citizen You’d amazed by the range of countries represented at a U.S. Citizenship ceremony, but you’ll soon discover that it’s definitely NOT a multicultural affair. On the contrary, you’ll swear an Oath of Allegiance, absolutely renouncing “ALL ALLEGIANCE TO ANY FOREIGN PRINCE, POTENTATE, STATE, OR SOVEREIGNTY” and swearing to “BEAR ARMS ON BEHALF OF THE UNITED STATES WHEN REQUIRED BY THE LAW.” You’ll recite the pledge of alligiance to the American flag and the republic for which it stands, “ONE NATION, UNDER GOD, INDIVISIBLE, WITH LIBERTY AND JUSTICE FOR ALL.” And finally, you’ll hear a congratulatory message from the President of the United States, such as these words by President Trump: “THIS COUNTRY IS NOW YOUR COUNTRY. OUR HISTORY IS NOW YOUR HISTORY. AND OUR TRADITIONS ARE NOW YOUR TRADITIONS.” “YOU NOW SHARE AN OBLIGATION TO TEACH OUR VALUES TO OTHERS, TO HELP NEWCOMERS ASSIMILATE TO OUR WAY OF LIFE.” I love that because US immigration isn’t just about entry and diversity - at least not to me - it’s about American values, traditions, and assimilation.
