Bowhunting Soul

Today I welcome Dalton Lewis of The Stickboys to the program. Dalton lives in western North Carolina, is a husband, an English teacher, and avid traditional bow hunter. He and his buddies run the YouTube channel "The Stickboys", where they chronicle their deer, turkey and hog hunting adventures. Their content is about as genuine as it gets. We talk all things hunting. Deer, hogs, turkeys, bows, arrow setups, stand setups and out of state hunting trips. Check them out on Instagram as well. Hope you enjoy the episode.

The title of this episode were sage words told to me by another hunter. His point was freezers are great, but stuff doesn't last forever in there. So if you're trying to figure out some different food preparations for that deer meat in your basement freezer, take note of this episode! Yes, we talk about burger, but also venison ribs, canned venison, and my personal favorite, blade roast. We even talk heart as a bonus option. I'll leave a link to the blade roast video I did last year https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QX2oAKqiYEs. I'll also be releasing a sausage-making video soon, so be sure to check out the "Bowhunting Soul" YouTube channel.

Troy Fowler is an interesting fellow to say the least. Better known as the Ranch Fairy, Troy has for years advocated for heavy arrows, high FOC (front of center), single-bevel broadheads for the big game we pursue. Troy shoots a lot of pigs which are probably some of the hardest animals to put an arrow through. We talk everything related to arrow build, penetration, weight, broadhead design and much more. Troy has a YouTube channel (also called the Ranch Fairy) and his delivery style is definitely unique to say the least, but don't let that fool you. This guy has seen a lot of animals die and has accumulated a wealth of knowledge gained from real-world experience. Enjoy the podcast!

Ah the question. Longbow vs. Recurve. Which is better? And just what are the differences anyway? What are the benefits of each? Which is more accurate? Which is faster? Which is easier to shoot? Do the commonly held beliefs regarding them still hold true today? Let's dive in and discuss all things related to each.  We'll also discuss some things regarding each style of bow you may not have thought about before.

Those who know me know I love deer, but I have a special soft spot for hunting wild hogs. Well, ok, "wild" is a relative term when you're hunting them over a corn feeder. Join me on this episode as I talk about my hog hunting experience, some stories and lessons learned. Hog hunting, no matter how easy or free range you make it, can provide thrills and a new quarry to chase when deer season is over. I'll leave links below for a couple of the outfitters in Florida I've hunted with.

Blain Swanson has had a hell of a year. He not only harvested his first ever animal with a stickbow - a beautiful black bear - but he also shot a dandy buck. Blain is our first return guest on the show and we talk about his season, the ups, downs and lessons learned. Enjoy the episode and please remember to LEAVE A RATING! Thanks for listening.

I recently did 10 videos on the Bowhunting Soul youtube channel outlining gift ideas for the hunter or outdoorsman or woman in your life. Some are very affordable, some are pricier, but worth the money. All of these suggestions are items I currently use and have used for many years (with the exception of one). Go ahead and watch those videos for a detailed description of each item, then click the amazon links below the description in the video. I've been looking forward to this one! Peter Juulsgaard is a Danish hunter, mostly with a traditional bow. On this episode, we talk about his very special trip to Spain to hunt Mouflon sheep and red deer. We talk about the logistics of the hunt, preparations, travel and get into the details of how his hunt unfolded. Peter is an understated guy, but he's got a lot of animals on the ground and is willing to share his knowledge and experience. Check out his YouTube channel for all of his videos: https://www.youtube.com/user/beheadingthedragon or just search for Peter Juulsgaard.

It's muzzleloader season (or will be) in many parts of the country. As much as love the bow, I really like taking a break from bow hunting and walking around with a smoke pole! This episode dives into how to get started with inline muzzleloaders, the tools you need, powder and bullet options, and best practices so you can make that one shot count!
