Racism, religious hypocrisy, physical abuse, animal cruelty, implied necrophilia...these are all, apparently, ingredients that go into making what has been called "the greatest love story ever told." Parts of Arnold's previous films have been upsetting, but Wuthering Heights is the first that can be considered genuinely bleak, an unpleasant mix of violence, mud, and class that is either extremely cynical or precisely satirical.
