1 Thessalonians 2:13-20

We want to go to the people around us with God’s truth that wouldn’t merely change their life—it would give them life. The problem is they don’t know how to believe God’s truth because they are not sure about truth at all. We often think this is a new confusion called, “post-modernism.” But is it? There seems to be a similar problem in the New Testament also, and it was both an obstacle to, and an opportunity for, God’s truth.

This Sunday we talk about truth: what it is, what it does, and what we should do with it.

I’m having a little trouble knowing which way to go with 1 Thessalonians 2:7-12. Paul's example for discipleship in planting and growing the gospel in the lives of others is through the family model of mothers and fathers. This brings me to my dilemma in what we should talk about this Sunday. Should we focus on discipleship? Or mothers and fathers? Or both? I can't wait to find out...

1 Thessalonians 2:1-5

Have you had an experience trying to share your faith in Jesus with someone that didn’t go well? Maybe bad experiences led you to wonder if this is really something God intends for you to do? Maybe you’ve learned to keep a lower profile, be more of an undercover agent for God…

And yet, our mission is to go to the people around us, bring them into God’s family, and build one another up as followers of Jesus. Just like with Paul in Thessalonica, going to others is often not easy. For many, it is intimidating. That’s why Paul’s description of his going to Thessalonica can be so encouraging. This Sunday in 1 Thessalonians 2:1-5, we’ll be reminded of three things that can help us in going to others with God’s Gospel.

Mark 14:1-12

Isaiah 7 describes the nativity, "the virgin shall be with child" and Isaiah 9 describes Christ's reign when "the government shall be on his shoulder." We are living in between those two, so maybe we are living in Isaiah chapter 8...

Joseph's circumstances seems so different from ours in that he had an angel tell him exactly what to do. But, how could Joseph know if what the angle said was true? What if he could know for sure the same you you can--by comparing what God seems to be saying to what God has already said.

You might be surprised at who God has used to be his prophetic voice to others, and how he might use you....
