Discipleship is one of the most widely used words in churches and ministries around the world. Unfortunately, discipleship is toxic in many of them. Toxic discipleship is a discipleship model and method focusing believers on advancing through a strategic process and adhering to a set of practices for the purpose of becoming more like Jesus. Pressure is exerted upon believers to “be discipled” and “make disciples” by committing to a discipleship group and discipleship relationships.
A believer’s freedom in Jesus is rarely taught in toxic discipleship. Toxic discipleship is not about setting people free in Christ but about setting people on a path of discipleship as defined by the discipler, pastor, church, or ministry. The words free and freedom are not common words in toxic discipleship. Common words in toxic discipleship are abiding, devotion, quiet time, solitude, stillness, journaling, commitment, devoted, follow, obedience, disciplines, prayer life, count the cost, pick up your cross, be discipled, make disciples, disciple-maker,
