Discipleship is one of the most widely used words in churches and ministries around the world. Unfortunately, discipleship is toxic in many of them. Toxic discipleship is a discipleship model and method focusing believers on advancing through a strategic process and adhering to a set of practices for the purpose of becoming more like Jesus. Pressure is exerted upon believers to “be discipled” and “make disciples” by committing to a discipleship group and discipleship relationships.

A believer’s freedom in Jesus is rarely taught in toxic discipleship. Toxic discipleship is not about setting people free in Christ but about setting people on a path of discipleship as defined by the discipler, pastor, church, or ministry. The words free and freedom are not common words in toxic discipleship.
