Brand the Interpreter episodes

  • Season 5 Finale with Mireya Pérez

It's surreal to think that another season came and went for Brand the Interpreter. This season was filled with so many more amazing guests. I had the chance to speak with professionals of all stages in their interpreting journeys. I feel so honored and humbled that people have chosen this platform to share their story and that you, the audience, has welcomed it with open arms.

To my amazement, the podcast continues to grow, spreading its message of interpreter stories across the globe. I get messages from people in places I never imagined would listen. We're out there, in small corners of the world, feeling like specs in such a big place, waiting to connect to a bigger network, to find deeper meaning, and as long as this podcast continues to connect us, I will continue to show up.

I've put together a compilation of this year's stories for this season's episode finale. I hope you enjoy it.

I also hope you come back next year for an even bigger and better Brand the Interpreter Podcast.

  • The Messy Side of Interpreting with Razan Roumany

Razan Roumany is a medical interpreter who is also trained in remote simultaneous interpretation. Although she specializes in medical interpretation, she has also interpreted for lawyers, teachers, social workers, and even a psychologist in a correctional facility.

Having grown up as an Arab-American and hearing her family speak in both French and Arabic is what sparked her passion for interpretation and language learning.  She attended the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign where she obtained a masters degree in Translation and Interpretation studies. Razan also obtained a bachelor's degree in Spanish and Pre Med (Pre-physician assistant) from Southeast Missouri State University.

She currently works as a Freelance Spanish and Arabic interpreter and a Spanish translator. Her ultimate goal is to work as an Arabic to Spanish simultaneous interpreter.

The interpretation industry is changing. Laws are being passed that require more certification. More and more, interpretation is going remote with video or phone. Machine interpretation is getting better and better. Plus, companies are cutting costs for services like interpretation.

If you aren’t certified, don’t want to use technology, don’t have special skills, and don’t have the ability to be flexible, you’ll get less and less work as an interpreter.

The OHCIA Interpreter Directory, or ID, can help. It brings together interpreters and the organizations that hire them — so they can help each other provide much-needed interpretation services.

    • Free — The ID is free to all interpreters — forever. It’s paid for by subscription fees charged to hiring organizations
    • Trusted — It lists trained, certified interpreters so hiring organizations can trust the quality of the services offered
    • Easy — Interpreters can list specialties, availability, and more — so hiring organizations can easily find talent

OHCIA are the right people to bring interpreters and organizations together like never before. Our leadership has deep roots in the interpreter community, and we care deeply about where this industry is going. We have advocated for interpreters and health care interpretation since 2010, and we’re trusted by individuals and organizations alike.

  • The Rhythm of Language with Dominique Cordero

After boarding a plane on a one-way ticket to Barcelona in 2011 to live with a host family she had never met, the life of today’s guest changed forever when she spent a year becoming fluent in Spanish.

Dominique’s unique take on how to learn Spanish as an adult has inspired many to jump into language learning. She has helped hundreds of her students build confidence in communicating with their families, having authentic connections with locals on their travels, and simply living the language. Dominique reminds us that “it’s never too late to learn a new language”

She is based in Austin, Texas, where she loves to go salsa dancing at the W Hotel and paddle boarding on Lady Bird Lake. But you’ll also find her in Mexico City for good chunks of the year, spending time with her husband’s family.
