  • How to Build a Strong Brand by Building a Strong Village with Jim Button

    Send a text

This episode of Branding Matters is a little different. The conversation takes a bit of a detour away from branding and veers into more of a spiritual direction. The reason being is that just over 4 years ago, my guest was given one year to live. But against all odds, this unicorn is still here and living what he describes as “a life with purpose.”

His name is Jim Button, and he is the Co-Founder of one of Calgary’s favourite breweries - Village Brewery. A true leader in marketing and community building, Jim’s passion for community investment has earned him impressive accolades which include a philanthropy award from the Canadian Association of Fundraising Professionals, TWO “Top 40 Under 40” awards with Avenue Magazine, and Community Builder of the Year award from the Alberta Small Brewers Association, just to name a few.

I invited Jim to be a guest on my show today to discuss why he thinks it takes a village to build a brand. I also wanted to discuss Jim’s new fundraising program that focuses on the mental health of kids living with cancer.

Today I’m sitting down with a very special guest who is near and dear to my heart. His name is Aiden Lang, and he is a proud member of the LGBTQ+ community. He’s also one of Calgary’s most celebrated drag queens under the age of 18. And most important of all, Aiden is my son.

Since the ripe old age of 14, Aiden (aka Crystal Guyser) has been performing at popular all ages drag venues around town; the most famous one being the main stage at Calgary Pride.

I invited Aiden to be a guest on my show to help celebrate Pride Month. We thought this would be a great opportunity to share his journey on how he created the Crystal Guyser brand. As you will soon discover, Aiden is anything BUT shy. And his story is one we can all learn from when it comes to living our authentic truth.

My guest today is one of the World’s Most Influential CMOs of 2021 according to Forbes. Her name is Andrea Brimmer and she is the Chief Marketing & PR Officer for Ally Financial - a digital financial services company that has disrupted the banking industry.

Referred to as the “Chief Disruption Officer”, Andrea spearheaded the creation of the Ally brand, developing everything from the brand pillars and cultural framework to the value proposition and delivery in the marketplace.

Her many honours and accolades include winning Adweek’s 2020 Brand Genius awards for marketers who have skillfully led their brands’ messaging to new heights. She has also been named three times to Forbes’ list of World’s Most Influential CMOs and is a two-time honouree of 100 Leading Women by Automotive News.

I invited Andrea to be a guest on my show to talk about her role in the re-branding of Ally. I wanted to know how she helped the company emerge with a strong reputation as a “different” kind of financial services company. And I was curious to learn what Ally does differently that makes them a disruptor brand.

  • You Asked, We Answered! with Aaron Lang

    Send a text

My guest today is someone who is near and dear to my heart. His name is Aaron Lang and he is my second born son. Even though he's my baby, Aaron is 15 years old and a budding entrepreneur (not to mention incredible chef!)

I invited Aaron to be a guest on my show to ask me questions for a change. You see, on January 1st, it will be my one year anniversary since I launched Branding Matters. During that time, I have learned a lot! Not only about branding, but about podcasting. And since this is my last show of the year, I thought I'd do something a little different. I've had many people reach out to me asking questions about podcasting and what I've learned. So I thought it would be fun to have Aaron come on and share some of those questions, which I will answer.

I'm no expert by all means, but if what I've learned can help you in any way, then that's what I'm here for. So sit back, relax, and enjoy the show.
