Blaine County Sheriff Travis Daugherty, elected in 2020, has spent his tenure in office keeping his word to advocate for the people. The biggest battles have come in fighting drugs, finding and prosecuting those who target the young of our community and those who provide poison to the addicted.
There have been multiple changes in the department. Those include:
• A full time investigative unit for sexual and child abuse. Not only has the team handled cases swiftly and justly, it has also taken on some older cases. The team has partnered with Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation’s Internet Crimes against Children and through that partnership has arrested several offenders who chose to sexually victimize the children of our county. “I never believed this would be so epidemic, but the number of people that have come forward to report these events is staggering at best,” Daugherty said.
• Becoming part of a task force working with several counties, OHP and Homeland Security to stop theft of precious metals and oilfield crimes. It has become a goal to bring to justice those who make tens of thousands of dollars and more selling copper, catalytic converters and oilfield equipment uipment. When energy companies must replace stolen equipment, they are less able to financially support the community and youth of the county.
• Becoming proactive in addressing illegal activity in all parts of the county. It is important to the sheriff’s office that farmers, ranchers and residents of the most rural areas of the county receive consistent law enforcement. Under Daugherty, there is a 24-hour patrol around the county, reducing the number of thefts and other crimes noticeably.
• Adding a school resource officer at Canton Public Schools.
• Adding a new level of intervention in jail administration that ensures inmates in need of mental health services get the treatment they need.
• Active shooter response trainers with a readiness attitude toward ending threats that are often real in rural areas.
Since taking office, Blaine County Sheriff Travis Daugherty has been instrumental in filing more than 250 felony cases, executing more than 200 search warrants and filing more than 600 misdemeanor cases. These numbers prove the sheriff and his staff are dedicated to keeping Blaine County protected. The numbers indicate Daugherty’s deep-seated level of dedication in both him and his staff.
“We will continue to work with the same intensity,” he said.
Evidence of that intensity is the progress made on the much-needed Blaine County Jail to keep prisoners, staff and the community safe. Daugherty has worked with the commissioners to expedite the construction. The partnership will produce the new jail by the end of May 2025.
Daugherty has also contracted with a company to provide I pads to inmates that allow them to complete classes online, from anger management and substance abuse as well as more than 200 other classes. As a reward for completing classes, inmates can receive free calls from their families.
Even with an excellent staff, Daugherty remains a working sheriff, taking calls and transporting inmates, and working to bring drug dealers and outlaws to justice.
As he makes the commute from the southernmost area of the county, Daugherty makes use of the time to be observant of ‘his county.’
“I drive a large portion of the county to see what is going on and would love to continue this mission to provide safer communities and long-lasting trust in law enforcement.
“I am the only Law Enforcement office that answers to the people, not a council or board. I get to work with some of the best people around daily. I don’t think of myself as the boss, but a co-worker. I won’t ask them to do something that I am not willing to do. I thank you all for your support.”
