  • Beating loneliness through connection for a better future, with Kindred Founder Anna Anderson

    Send a text

My guest this week is Anna Anderson Founder of Kindred, a co-working space in West London that is passionate about building community with real life human connection, and is inspired by the openness, warmth, and connectivity that is created by gathering around a campfire, in a way that respects and celebrates people and the planet.

Anna opened Kindred in December 2018, motivated by a lack of physical spaces that encouraged people to connect with one another. They are an open house that encourages people to gather for co-working, events and exceptional food and drink. She's passionate about building a stronghold for community to tackle loneliness and to celebrate our innate, human need to connect IRL with others.

She was motivated to build something with heart, and not just something extractive. She believes that humans do better when they’re able to gather (and not just for work purposes), and we should create spaces in cities for this to be able to happen organically.

Whilst restoring  an old dilapidated Georgian building and admitting that most old bricks and mortar businesses especially in hospitality are going to have an impact on the environment, she is working towards making the space more regenerative.

They work with small, local wherever possible, family run suppliers across their food and drink offering, sourcing meat and fish from sustainable, regenerative farmers, and their wine from biodynamic, organic producers. They pay at least London living wage if not more across their hospitality team and they're often able to get their food waste down to a minimum by using excess ingredients for staff meals, and their pasta of the day. They pay for green energy tariffs and are exploring ways to generate their own electricity through using solar panels on the roof.

If we can all try and mitigate what we can, as we go, we can build great places for communities to come together, connect and make a difference in each others's lives.

  • Making the most of what we've got, with Beira founder Antoinette Fionda

    Send a text

My guest this week is Antoinette Fionda, founder of Beira, a Scottish sustainable, honest, ethical, slow fashion brand that saves fabric waste from the luxury fashion industry & ethically crafts limited edition womenswear that will last a lifetime.

Their circle starts where others end, with the end of roll fabric which they save from being discarded, breathing new life into fabrics & reworking them into contemporary pieces.

The fashion industry annually generates 144m tonnes of textile waste and recycles less than 1% (Fionda, 2022).

One of their policies is no new materials!

Inspired by the craftsmanship of Italy and the folklore of Beira in Scotland the aim is to re-explore all parts of the process to minimise the negative effects from design though to manufacturer and delivery.

    Their 3 key values:

Circular Sourcing: They purchase luxury deadstock which they call the ‘best waste in the world’ and remanufacture the fabrics into garments. Their circular sourcing, solar panels, ‘waste’ shipping protocol, and packaging, provides a 90% reduction to their carbon footprint.   They have already saved 10,000 metres of fabric to date!

Radical Transparency: They know the names of every artisan who makes their clothes and pay €28 an hour. They are transparent across all areas of the business. They publish the cost of every element of the garment from wages, packaging, shipping, manufacturing, materials to everyday business practice.

Honest Luxury: Functional yet feminine womenswear which are designed to stand the test of time. Selling direct to the customer eliminates the wholesale mark-up resulting in quality at an honest luxury price - less than 1/3 of the cost.

Essentially, Beira’s strategy reduces the environmental impact of the materials already in the supply chain and creates quality and honest luxury womenswear. Luxury fashion that doesn’t cost the earth.

Their motto: Buy Less, Buy Better. Invest.

Antoinette shows us how still buy good quality clothes that also allow us to be gentle and nurturing to the planet

  • Clean green with The Seep Company founder Laura Harnett

    Send a text

My guest this week is Laura Harnett, founder of the B corp certified business The Seep Company who are replacing plastic household essentials like sponges & cloths to make them well-branded, effective, compostable & genuinely sustainable.

Circularity is at the heart of Seep where they design everything with the end-of-life of the product in mind & they're on a mission to stop 1 billion plastic cleaning tools from going to landfill by 2030.

After being diagnosed with breast cancer, Seep was one of the silver linings to come out of it.

Laura says she wants her kids and her kids' kids not to hate our generation for making bad decisions.

This is huge and it starts with giving everyone to have access to better products and services that have the planet front and centre in their design and to live in a country that places the planet at the forefront of their decisions like waste management and travel infrastructure.

This feels so massive to her but she says she has to believe that every little step counts.

Thank you so much Laura for making it easier for us to make small conscious changes in our homes so we are part of the solution and not part of the pollution.

  • Caring for the planet with skincare brand Upcircle co-founder Anna Brightman

    Send a text

This week’s guest is Anna Brightman, a Forbes 30 under 30 in 2021 & co-founder of Upcircle Beauty transforming leftover natural ingredients into quality skincare products.

They are certified B-Corp, certified organic, certified vegan, certified cruelty-free, certified plastic negative, palm oil-free, sustainable, handmade in the UK and housed in 100% recyclable packaging.

Everything they do at UpCircle is about seeing value in things that already exist. That’s why they make sustainable skincare products from ingredients that would otherwise be discarded.

They've also extended the circular approach that they take to their ingredients to packaging too, and have now refilled 45,000 pieces of packaging via their “Return, Refill, Reuse” scheme.

They are a team of 15 people, with an average age of 27. 75% of the team identify as women and they've had practically no investment, given the amount of growth they've experienced.

Every ingredient they upcycle prevents the release of greenhouse gases through decomposition. For example, the 450 tonnes of coffee that they've upcycled into their scrubs and serum would've otherwise released an equivalent 54 tonnes of CO2. Sustainable products often cost more but they’re changing that. Their most expensive product is £26.99 and their Refill Scheme offers a freepost label and a 20% discount.

Thanks Anna for creating a natural, organic, affordable beauty brand that inspires confidence in ourselves and allows us to participate in the circular economy in consideration for the wellbeing of the planet.

  • A brush with climate, with salon owner & activist Paloma Garcia

    Send a text

My guest this week is Paloma Garcia, founder of PALOMA a hair salon that is invested in the future & deeply committed to the sustainability movement.

They are 98% recyclable & a proud member of Sustainable Salons Australia who together have diverted 1.7million+ from landfill.

She linked up with a climate scientist & social scientist in A Brush with Climate to educate hairdressers on climate solutions which they chat about with customers.

A brush with climate was founded quickly after her climate journey began. Once she knew the science around climate change and the crisis we are all facing, she quickly started holding meaningful conversations with her clientele and community around her salon.

She soon realised she wasn’t the only one highly concerned, the majority of her clients were also.

So she created a checklist, for tangible changes we can all make in our everyday lifestyle that will have big impact on emissions.

After a few years of this she soon discovered this unique opportunity hairdressers have in holding this meaning conversation.

So she linked up with a climate scientist and social scientist, and they have now educated hundreds of hairdressers around the country and have lots more lined up!

Thank you so much Paloma for making climate solutions feel like everyday solutions- and for spreading the message through everyday human connections and conversations and for showing us that little by little we can all contribute to ensuring a better future

  • Healing oceans & humans with author, champion surfer & marine social scientist Dr Easkey Britton

    Send a text

My guest this week is Dr Easkey Britton, author of ‘Saltwater in the Blood’ & ‘Ebb and Flow’, Five times Irish National Surfing Champion & 2006 British pro-tour champion & a fully qualified marine social scientist and research consultant, with Ph.D in Environment and Society, contributing her expertise in ocean health & social wellbeing to research projects including the EU-funded Horizon2020 project on Seas, Oceans and Public Health in Europe.

Easkey talks about understanding our human relationship with nature, especially water and the ocean and how to look at it and explore how we might restore our connection with water from the perspective of our health and well-being.

From surfing and travelling, her experience left her uncertain about what are we giving back. What impact or footprint was she leaving in her wake, and wanting to better understand what was going on in this whole incredible eco-system all around her, below her.

She’s always kept a journal traveling and so has always written, traveling solo- reflective practice. Ebb and Flo is her third book. It's a real evolution from first book Salt water in the blood which was more of a memoir- this one goes broader and deeper with water not just the ocean- and shows that wherever you are on this planet you can be connected to water.

As a blue health scientist of those interconnections of she asks how our health and wellbeing is dependent on that of the water bodies around us, and looking at ways that we might activate or restore those connections in our everyday lives.

Her vision is that we learn or relearn to live in a more ecological way of being where nature isn’t just some kind of frill or add on in our everyday lives.

Thanks Dr Easkey for leading at the edge of the wave to help ensure the safe-keeping of our seas and rivers, so that we too may lead healthful lives as part of the living systems of nature on Planet Earth.

  • Getting through the messy times with author & poet Samantha Lourie

    Send a text

My guest this week is Samantha Lourie, a free-spirit poet, artist and author of The Power of Mess, a guide to finding joy and resilience when life feels chaotic.

She believes that when we are more at peace within, we become more aware of ourselves and our connection to our immediate environment and to the planet as a whole.

The power of mess is like a homecoming. A homecoming back to yourself, to gathering a sense of changeable control over your life where your resilience and sense of self is sharpened and you are more present to the whole of life because of  it.

More present and therefore more responsive. It's in this responsiveness that your sense of the world subsequently gets into working order as well.

You start to notice things you would have just walked past a few years or seasons back because of being in the heart of overwhelm without a toolkit or support system to navigate through it.

We become more available, accessible and self-responsible  in our relationships with our bodies, our homes, the people we love and live with, our neighbourhoods and this new dynamic to live from continues to spread outward to our Planet Earth.

Essentially, in this growing sense of belonging and active participation, we create and continue the regenerating properties in not just being alive but feeling alive and fully living while we are here.

Thanks so much Samantha for giving us a way to face the messy stuff in ourselves, so that we can create flourishing lives, communities and planet.

    Send a text

This week’s guest is Carol Sanford, a consistently recognized disruptor & positive contrarian working with Fortune 500 & new economy executives in designing & leading systemic business change & design.

She’s worked with great leaders of businesses such as Google, DuPont, Intel, P&G & Seventh Generation & her award-winning books are required reading at leading business schools including Harvard, Stanford, Haas Berkeley & MIT.

     Our conversation covers:

    - What is 'regeneration' in life, business - from the work That Carol does with leaders/teams/organisations

    - How she helps leaders move from a behaviourist & humanist practice into a more living systems & developmental way of relating, working, being

    - How we stop trying to be 'heroes' and start to flow as part of a much larger 'purpose' (nature, universe)

    - How her maternal grandfather was half Mohawk – and how that, and other ancient wisdoms influenced her regenerative approach

    - How feel our way back into the way of nature and its living systems instead of trying to ‘sustain’ or ‘save’ the planet

    - Having ALS (in UK known as Motor Neuron Disease) we talk about how her regenerative approach has given her a framework for herself and those around her for the time she has left & her plans for your passing.

Thank you so much Carol for your dedication to living systems, and for passing on your teachings through all your books, articles and podcasts so that we too may learn to live and work in this way in order to get back in alignment with nature and have a more hopeful existence where we work with the essence of who we are as humans in harmony with the planet.
