This week's guest is award-winning journalist, author and broadcaster Angela Saini. She has the knack of getting to the nub of how science impacts us all whether it's How Science Got Women Wrong in her book Inferior, or in her latest book Superior which explores the murky history of race science.
Host, artist & illustrator Lou Hamilton talks with Angela as they discuss how 'race' as a social construct reaches its tentacles far and wide; not least in how racism impacts health as we've seen in the spiked numbers of ethnic minorities affected during the global pandemic. Angela talks about why she has come off certain social media, and why she wants to use platforms that give space & time for more nuanced discussion and debate, in order to move things forward for the better. This is her Story from the Edge.

This week's guest on Brave New You TRIBE podcast is Clare Pooley, writer of the blog Mummy was a Secret Drinker, the memoir Sober Diaries- the unexpected joy of being sober, and most recently author of the 'feel-good novel of 2020' The Authenticity Project (recently #19 on the Amazon charts). As she emerged as Sober Mummy, Clare attracted 3 million followers to her blog. There was a gap in the market; most of the books on giving up booze were about the drinking days, not about giving up, how to do it and what to expect in the process. She had given up just before a diagnosis of breast cancer. She didn't feel brave; she believes courage is when you are given a choice about something and cancer wasn't a choice. Instead she felt that her courage came through choosing doing something that scares her, like getting through the day without picking up a glass of wine.
Host, artist & illustrator Lou Hamilton talks with Clare as they discuss sobriety, loneliness, shame, the grubby truth behind perfection, and finding confidence in courage. This is her Story from the Edge.

This week's guest on Brave New You TRIBE is Jade Statt, founder of the charity Street Vet UK. When she recognised that there was a problem for the homeless being able to get medical help for their pets, she set out to find a solution. Teaming up with another vet who had a similar mission, they strapped on backpacks and joined forces with other homeless providers to supply care to the owners' dogs. And so Street Vet UK was born and since then it has spread across the country with many vets and nurses volunteering their time to give support and care where it is needed. Pets are therapy for their owners who often put their dogs' well-being above their own. Broadcaster Clare Balding is now the Street Vet UK Ambassador.
Host, artist & illustrator, Lou Hamilton chats with Jade as they discuss mental health, pet therapy, homelessness and what courage looks like when you believe in something and encourage others to come along on the journey. This is Jade's Story from the Edge.

This week's guest is Nik Southern, Founder of Grace and Thorn flowers and widely adored as the rock 'n' roll Queen of Floristry. After quitting IT recruitment which she hated, she enrolled on a floristry course whose teacher was not enamoured by the way she did things. But she'd got the bug and after a bit of to-ing and fro-ing she made the leap; right out to the furthest edge of what you could do with a bunch of flowers. No belly domes for her, she was all out with a kaleidoscope of clashing colours, textures, and asymmetry. She was taking no prisoners and she was on a revolutionary march to setting flowers free. And then she took on the meagre pot plant; forgotten dusty, strangled specimens of the 70's, she hauled them right slap bang into the 21st Century with an accompanying book for the less green fingered amongst us, showing us "How not to Kill your Plants". She coined the phrase "Green Up Your Gaff" and took on the fashion heavy weights to wow them with her floral installations at top end events, winning the Chelsea in Bloom People's Choice awards.
Brave New You TRIBE "Stories from the Edge" podcast host Lou Hamilton talks and laughs (watch out Nik's laugh is infectious) with Nik who shares the courage it takes to ditch the day job, and build a brand from your passion. Once she got out of her own way, she knew she wouldn't fail. She says "it starts with self-belief" and picturing a positive outcome. Throw yourself in at the deep end and the next time you have to do something terrifying you're going to be more confident.
By the end this episode this real life Brave New Girl is going to rock your pot plants and lift your spirits.

Emma Livingstone is one of around 130,000 adults living with Cerebral Palsy in this country, making it one of the largest disability groups in the UK. A trained Speech Therapist and married with three children, Emma realised through her own experience that those suffering with CP are abandoned by the authorities once they turn 18. Frustrated for herself and for the others in her community she decided to go from 'complainer to campaigner' and founded the charity Adult CP Hub, to lobby for those much needed services to be provided as lifelong integrated care for adults with cerebral palsy.
Our host Lou Hamilton talks to Emma about her passion for positive change, her tenacity, her ability to own her condition and her drive to create a community that receives more recognition and support.
