Haaretz reports that UAE President Mohammed bin Zayed called Netanyahu ten days before October 7 and spent 45 minutes warning him that Hamas was planning a major attack.
Egypt's spy chief reportedly warned him too. Netanyahu never briefed the head of the Shin Bet or the head of the IDF. This week he's suing the newspaper.
Matt and CJ walk through the warning, the money Netanyahu kept flowing to Hamas for years, and the Iran war that both he and Trump now need to break their way before their elections.

Lindsay Clancy strangled her three children in their Duxbury home and admits it. After seven weeks of trial, eleven jurors wanted a hospital, one said guilty, and Judge Sullivan declared a mistrial.
Outside the courthouse, hundreds of supporters showed up in pink with shirts reading Believe, She Needed Help, and Peace for Lindsay. Influencers bragged about a million views. Protesters blamed the drug companies, the doctors, and her husband.
CJ and Matt start with the question the state can't answer: if justice isn't served, what moral right does her family have, and what would restitution even look like? From there it goes where it has to go: a culture that lionizes a child killer, 1.1 million abortions a year, sitcom dads and found families, and the long history of governments breaking the family, the church, and the lodge so that nothing stands between you and the state.
Then, the next play in that game: pay off your debt if you'll go fight in the Middle East.

Greg Bovino went on Tucker Carlson and claimed 107 million illegal aliens are living in the United States. That's roughly one in four people in the country. Nobody pushed back.
Matt and CJ take the claim seriously enough to test it: where could a number like that come from, why would the man selling it want it high, and here's the harder question—if you believed it, what would you be willing to do about it?
Two immigration hawks work through where enforcement crosses the line, what the last great immigration wave actually took to absorb, why the ancient Greeks guarded citizenship the way they did, and the version of enforcement that removes the incentives instead of sending masked agents into your neighborhood.

Axios and CNN say the US is sneaking 15 to 20 tankers a night through the Strait of Hormuz. Brent crude hit $93 the same day. Both things can't be true, and the price is the one that doesn't lie.
Matt and CJ work through the Hormuz numbers, why a ship count is the wrong metric, and how Trump is using the Strategic Petroleum Reserve to hold down the futures price while the salt caverns storing it approach the level where they stop being structurally sound.
China has been draining its own reserve to keep global prices from going higher, and Trump responded by threatening sanctions on anyone who trades with Iran. Beijing's answer was a meme.
Then the story that should have been a scandal: on July 8, Israeli intelligence told Trump that Iran planned to shoot down Air Force One.
The CIA assessed the threat as low credibility. Trump believed Israel, hid in a food service cart, and boarded a nondescript military transport with a handful of aides, including 35-year-old advisor Natalie Harp.
Marco Rubio and the rest of the staff flew home on Air Force One without being told. Five weeks later, Karoline Leavitt resigned to spend more time with her family.
CJ opens with the Athenian expedition to Sicily, the subject of his new Dangerous History Podcast series, and why the pro-war speeches of 415 BC sound like Dick Cheney in 2003.

Forty trillion in debt. A $1.5 trillion budget request for a military that can't win a war. Fauci pleading the Fifth over a hundred times while holding a pardon that covers eleven years. CJ Killmer and I started with a simple question and spent an hour finding out how bad the answer is: is there still a political solution to any of this?
CJ's answer, as a historian: in theory yes, in practice under fifty percent. You would need people in power willing to say the unipolar moment ended a decade ago, willing to wind the empire down on purpose, and able to survive the deep state long enough to do it.
We get into why that's so unlikely. CJ walks through the idea that a civilization wears a groove into the record in its first few generations and the needle just follows it from there, from manifest destiny to Hawaii to the Philippines to leaders talking about space as a "new frontier." We look at what actually happened when Britain unwound the largest empire before ours, what the Soviets did right in Afghanistan that we did wrong, and why no empire in history has collapsed while holding the world's reserve currency.
Then the part I keep coming back to. There is no political solution without justice for elites, and we don't have any. Epstein is dead and Maxwell is in prison, and nobody else connected to any of it has faced a consequence. Hunter Biden is doing podcast interviews. Lindsey Graham's worst case is board seats and Fox contributor money.
Fauci got a preemptive pardon covering 2014 through 2025 and then pleaded the Fifth anyway. CJ makes the case that Athens had something we deliberately left out of modern democracy: real oversight, real prosecutions, and ostracism.
If the political road is closed, that leaves technology or blood. I make the case for the first. CJ lays out what the second one looks like, and it isn't armies marching at each other.
And the people spending the most money on it can't tell you which.
Kevin O'Leary went on Tucker Carlson to defend his $100 billion AI data center. Asked what regular people get out of it, he said "nobody knows."
Asked why build it, he said beat China. That answer, from that man, reveals more about where AI is headed than any demo or benchmark.
The same technology generating kill lists reviewed for twenty seconds apiece just won a Nobel Prize for cracking a fifty-year bottleneck in medicine.
The dystopia and the utopia are both already here, running in parallel. What decides which one wins isn't the technology. It's whose machine it runs on, and who that machine answers to.
The walk: the AI dystopia that's already shipping, the utopia that's already producing receipts, the spokesmen who can't make the case, and the one condition the entire optimistic future depends on.

Lindsey Graham is dead at 71, the Iran war is back on, and Conservative Inc. spent the week claiming courtroom evidence that two journalists in the room say doesn't exist.
Matt and CJ walk through all three stories: what the state actually showed at Tyler Robinson's preliminary hearing versus what Benny Johnson claimed, the strange timing and aftermath of Graham's sudden death, and how the US broke the memorandum of understanding that was supposed to end the war with Iran.

The preliminary hearing in Tyler Robinson's case wrapped this week, with a judge weighing whether there's enough to send the Charlie Kirk assassination to trial. Matt and CJ use the moment to ask a simpler question than most of the coverage does: does the official story actually hold together?
Their starting point is how narratives work. A true account tends to be simple, because reality carries most of the weight. A false one gets complicated fast, because someone has to build and maintain the parts reality won't support on its own.
CJ frames it through the way old scientific paradigms survive on patch after patch until a simpler explanation finally replaces them. Matt frames it through a narcissist he once dealt with whose thousand-word alibi gave itself away by explaining too much.
From there they walk the parts of that day that set off the alarm. A bolt-action .30-06 as the alleged murder weapon, and everything a 22-year-old would have had to do to carry it, reassemble it, sight it, and fire it cold. A 3,000-person event with no ambulance staged and, reportedly, two doctors on scene waved off. A man carried to a private SUV with his head unsupported instead of worked on where he fell.
A rifle the FBI located in the woods after dogs reportedly missed it. A kill site dug up a foot deep and paved over inside four days by two separate companies. Text messages entered as a photo of a screen with the timestamp smashed out.
Then the question the framework always comes back to: who benefits? Kirk spent the last stretch of his life turning against a war with Iran, naming Thomas Massie his favorite man in Congress, and reportedly telling people he thought he'd be killed. Joe Kent has said foreign-nexus leads were shut down. Matt and CJ lay out the circumstantial picture, including the Iran war widening once Kirk was no longer in Trump's ear, and where it does and doesn't point.
None of it is offered as proof of a single alternative story. The point is narrower and harder to dismiss: the people asking for public trust haven't earned it, and a story that needs this much machinery is a reason to look harder.
The Charlie Kirk assassination has one official narrative, and it comes from federal law enforcement and Turning Point USA. Matt spent a week digging into it and came away less convinced, not more.
This episode is really about how narratives work. A true story is easy to believe because the pieces fit reality. A false one is a chain of "maybe" links that gets shakier the more you line it up, until the whole thing fails a rational person's sniff test. We've seen it before with Karen Read, with COVID, with the WMDs that sold the Iraq war.
Then Matt runs the Kirk questions in order. The missing ambulance at a 3,000-person event. The private SUV and the unsupported head. The casing that matches the rifle and the fragment that doesn't. The crime scene torn up and repaved in four days. The four-hour hole in the shooter's timeline. The unsecured rooftop. The Discord confession the defense calls fake, and the arrest times that won't line up. The foreign-nexus lead the FBI reportedly waved off.
The point isn't a rival theory. The point is that the people asking for our trust haven't earned it. If Tyler Robinson did this alone, the case for it has to be a lot better than what's on offer. Matt lays out why you shouldn't take the official story on faith
The state took an anti-government, secessionist document and turned its anniversary into a celebration of itself. On America's 250th 4th of July, Matt and historian CJ Killmer start there — then trace that same inversion through the news.
The Iran war that never actually ended: the shaky MOU, the $300 billion rebuild check, and Trump's pivot from threatening to level Iran's infrastructure to offering a slice of its own frozen money if it drops the Strait of Hormuz tolls — tolls worth an estimated tens of billions a year.
Then the one that should be a national story and isn't: Section 219 of the NDAA, which would wire the U.S. and Israeli defense industrial base together, convert a votable annual aid package into a permanent structure, and strip Congress of the yearly check.
Massie and Khanna tried to remove it. Leadership wouldn't allow the vote. CJ brings the history, right down to the wartime president who refused to let American troops serve under foreign command.
