  • Alive on Purpose: Health, Heart & Holding On with Maggie Henderson

Send a message into the Brightside

In this episode of Braving the Brightside, we sit down with Maggie Henderson for an honest conversation about choosing life—again and again—even when your body has asked more than its fair share.

Diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at a young age and later living with a genetic heart condition, Maggie has faced her own mortality far earlier than most. From sudden loss, to cardiac arrest, to open-heart surgery, her story is one of resilience, humor, and a deep commitment to staying present for the life she’s still building.

We talk about listening to your body, finding strength through movement, redefining what health really means, and the quiet bravery it takes to keep showing up—one day at a time.

This isn’t a story about perfection or toxic positivity. It’s about choosing to live fully, even when it’s hard.

If you’ve ever felt fragile, determined, or both at once—this episode will meet you where you are.

  • Lift While You Climb: Lessons on Sobriety, Support & Service with Freddy Shegog

Send a message into the Brightside

What does it take to rebuild a life from the ground up?

What does it mean to rise — not just for yourself, but for the people who will one day need your light?

In this powerful and deeply moving episode, speaker, educator, and advocate Freddy Shegog opens up about his journey through homelessness, addiction, stigma, family fractures, and the quiet battles nobody sees. But more importantly, he shares the grace, grit, and community that helped him climb out — and the purpose that keeps him reaching back to lift others with him.

Freddy’s story is a testament to the strength we don’t know we have until life demands it — and to the truth that where we start does not define where we can go.

He reminds us that support is sacred, faith matters, and change is possible at any age, from any background, under any circumstance.

This conversation is raw, honest, emotional, and full of hope.

If you’ve ever felt written off, underestimated, or unsure whether your life can turn around… Freddy will show you what’s possible.

Stick around to hear how he’s working to make college accessible for everyone — and why his mission is only getting bigger.

  • Empathize. Empower. Evolve: Turning Pain into Purpose with Syreeta Martin Part 2

Send a message into the Brightside

In Part 2 of this powerful conversation, we go even deeper into the heart of Syreeta’s journey — the unraveling, the rebuilding, and the quiet bravery it takes to choose healing over coping.

Syreeta opens up about the accident that forced her to finally stop running, the emotional layers she had to face when everything went still, and the moment she realized she was done surviving and ready to become. We talk about boundaries that protect your peace, breaking generational patterns, learning to feel without numbing, and the truth behind her now-iconic line:

“Your yes is your sword. Your no is your shield.”

This episode is for anyone standing in the middle of their becoming — tired of old cycles, learning to choose themselves, or trying to trust the ground beneath them again.

Raw, vulnerable, grounding, and full of hard-won wisdom — Part 2 brings this two-part conversation to a powerful close.

Wherever you are in your own journey, keep living.

The shift might be closer than you think.

  • Sorry for Everything-We Hit a Snag

Send a message into the Brightside

Hey everyone — this week’s episode hit a major technical snag. The main audio file became corrupted, and I’ve spent the last couple days trying everything short of casting a spell to bring it back. The story shared in that interview was vulnerable, powerful, and deeply meaningful to me, and I take that responsibility seriously.

Because I want to do it justice — not rush out something broken — the full episode will now be coming next Friday. I’m doing everything I can to recover the original audio, and if that fails… don’t worry. Their story will absolutely still be heard.

Thanks for your patience, your understanding, and for sticking with me while I learn my lesson the hard way: back up your files, people. Back them up.

Send a message into the Brightside

Fear isn’t the villain we think it is.

In this first-ever Braving the Frightside Halloween special, Dan steps into the dark to explore what fear really is — from the childhood monsters under our beds to the grown-up ones that live inside our heads.

Through personal stories of sobriety, loss, change, and rediscovery, Dan unpacks how fear isn’t here to destroy us — it’s here to teach us. To point us toward what matters most. To show us we’re still alive.

Grab your coffee, light a candle, and join us for Coffee Break: What Haunts Us, Heals Us — a hauntingly hopeful dive into the courage it takes to face the dark and find the light anyway.

  • Tomorrow Needs You with Andrea Pierson

Send a message into the Brightside

Some conversations remind you what bravery really looks like — not the loud, spotlight kind, but the quiet courage it takes to turn pain into purpose.

This week, I sit down with Andrea Pierson, an advocate, educator, and co-founder of Tomorrow Needs You — a foundation born from heartbreak and built on hope. After losing two former student-athletes to suicide, Andrea chose to honor their memory by helping others find their reason to stay.

In this episode, we talk about grief, growth, and the weight of showing up when life gets heavy. We explore what it means to support others through their darkest moments — and how compassion, conversation, and community can save lives.

This one’s tender. It’s real. And it’s a reminder that even in loss, light still finds a way through.

    Because tomorrow needs you, too.

If you or someone you know is struggling, please reach out for help. You can contact the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline by calling or texting 988, or visit 988lifeline.org.

  • From Jackass to Joy with Chris Raab Part II

Send a message into the Brightside

In Part II of this unfiltered and quite expectedly hilarious conversation, Chris Raab dives even deeper into what comes after chaos. From addiction and heartbreak to running marathons and finding purpose, Raab opens up about recovery, community, and the hard (and often humorous) lessons that come with rebuilding a life.

We talk about learning to sit with discomfort, finding the right “crew” in life, and how even the darkest chapters can lead to gratitude, growth, and a few good laughs along the way.

If you’ve ever felt lost, stuck, or like you’re on the wrong boat — this episode’s your reminder that you can always turn the wheel.
