This morning, as we finish our sermon series in 1 Thessalonians, Paul gives us his insight into what the people of the future will look like. As we enter this advent season and anticipate the return of Jesus, we get a peek into the future.

This morning we’ll see Paul continuing the conversation about Jesus’ return. Last time Paul showed us how Jesus’ return brings comfort in grief, but this time we’ll see how Jesus’ future return changes our attitudes today. We’ll explore this text to see how having such a hope produces anticipation, service and resilience in our lives. We’ll hear Paul’s call to be alive and alert to the hope that we have!

This morning we are looking at Mark’s account of Jesus feeding a crowd of the four thousand people. It’s a well known event to many of us, but hopefully we can go a bit deeper than one might expect and see Jesus as our great and powerful provider of all things, not just our physical bread. With that in mind, let’s hope and pray that God will grant us a deeper understanding of all that He has done for us through His Son.

In this next section we’ll see Paul responding to the Thessalonians’ grief and questions about death. Paul’s response is careful, hopeful and sensitive… and it’s all about hoping in Jesus. Paul turns their attention to knowing the foundation of their hope in Jesus, the focus of their hope in Jesus and the fruit of their hope in Jesus

In this next section Paul continues his conversation about the Thessalonians’ sanctification (growing as Christians). He addresses two key areas of growth for the Thessalonians: One inside the church and one outside the church. Christians often look like rabbits frozen in the headlights when questioned about sexuality & purity. Few have much to say about sex and marriage that is faintly inspiring or compelling. When forced to publish some kind of official statement, it reads more like the terms and conditions of a software upgrade than a manifesto for human flourishing. This morning, in Paul’s letter to the Thessalonians, we hear a clear call to sexual holiness & flourishing.

We live in a world which seem to continually surprise us with it’s lack of predictability. The global geo-political realm is about as stable as Scotlands’ links with the rest of the UK. Christendom lies dead in the streets of the UK and it is becoming harder and harder to remain faithful to the lamb. In times like these the book of Revelation has been given to the church as a comfort and encouragement to keep pressing on and to believe. My hope and prayer as we think on it together is that our faith is stirred and we are simply left worshipping the Lamb!

Sometimes it is good to look at bigger portions of Scripture. It may allow us to see the wood rather than simply the trees closest to us. Through looking at such a large amount of text my hope is to consider together Christ’s plan for reaching into your world. By your world I mean those relationships which you are involved in, be it with family members, loved ones, friends or work colleagues.
