Here Paul shows us how the pastor and how all of us must orient ourselves in serving and ministering to one another.

The primary lesson I get from these verses is one regarding the heart I am to have in serving and ministering to the members of God's family the church. I find here how I am to approach you and those brothers and sisters I work with abroad. I find in this how we are to approach one another. What are the desires we are to have. What are the attitudes we are to have towards one another. What is the impact we should want into each other's lives and alongside of each other in the lives of others. What in a sense is the dynamic of service that should envelop us all as we live together before the Lord and as His servants and members of His redeemed family.

The outcome of proclaiming our gospel is always to bring people to a point of submission to it. We think of this as saving faith. This is more than a mental acceptance of the truth of the information of the Gospel. It is a trust or surrender to that truth. You can understand why then the Jews at the time of the early church were not all too happy with this new Christian off shoot from their faith. All of their traditions and teachings, all their customs of sacrifice and temple worship, all the prophecies and promises for the nation and its future, all its wisdom and all its spiritual benefit drawn up from the Hebrews to their mind was being hijacked by Paul and the Apostles and channeled into a focus upon one person, Jesus of Nazareth. You can image this would make them quite resentful and jealous. Still does to a large extent. To this we, the Christian plead, guilty. We lay claim to not only to the New Testament but all the writings of the Old Testament. We treasure the Scriptures as accounts of God's preparing history directing all people into His salvation... into His good news and that news is all about Jesus Christ.

When considering the Gospel as good news to ourselves, consider that it is also good news to God.

Here in our text Paul is introducing himself. We must believe that what he says about himself is foundational to his great influence; an influence that reverberates out still to this day. An application for ourselves is to find something of this same foundation for our lives now.
