As Jesus taught his teaching was gathering around one point. From that point all He said will then be projected out to us. That point was the point of the cross. What is interesting is that Christ spoke little directly to the cross and its purpose. And yet all that He taught was to be understood one day in the light of that cross. All that Christ taught were deposits of vital information to be received by faith but not to be fully understood but through the cross.

A few years back I was teaching a masters level course at a North American Seminary. I lectured for about an hour and a half on Matthew 7-21-22 where Jesus says that not everyone who says to me Lord, Lord will enter into the Kingdom of heaven. That on the judgment day many will say to me Lord, Lord and I will say depart from me I never knew you. I emphasized to these students the importance of replacing head knowledge of the doctrines of salvation with a heart assurance of being saved through Jesus Christ. I shared with them six essential experiences in salvation that they should be able to identify in their lives or any other when Christ brings a person into salvation. After the lecture was complete these 20 to 30 students were given a break. Before the break was over a small band of them returned declaring that I needed to stop my teaching the course because I was making them feel unsafe-. Well in actuality if you do not have a proper and right assurance of salvation that is exactly how you should feel - unsafe.

The progressive Christian says that the evangelical makes too much about sin. What is the proper response to this accusation- Answer- You cannot make sense of the ministry of Christ if you do not see it as His response to the seriousness of sin... His errand in the world was to deal with sin.

The temptation of Christ was Satan's attack on His essential humanity. All temptation is an attack on our humanity. Going backwards from that temptation we can learn what we are made of and what we are made for.

Jesus said little directly about God the Father and yet He had much to say of Himself. Let us understand why.
