  • The Power of a Smile
Last night, I was looking through some pictures from our recent visit to California. It was a trip to see our 20-month old grandson, Nico. I noticed that in every picture he had a big, slobbery smile. And, as I looked at the pictures, I couldn’t help but smile too!  In this podcast, Tony discusses the power of a smile.
Quotes: “Every time you smile at someone, it is an action of love, a gift to that person, a beautiful thing.” ― Mother Teresa
“The expression one wears on one’s face is far more important than the clothes one wears on one’s back.” – Dale Carnegie
Scripture: A glad heart lights up the face, but an anguished heart breaks the spirit. —–Proverbs 15:13
Reflections: Do you agree that smiles are powerful?  Have you ever had your mood changed by the smile of a child?  What can we learn about smiling that can help us in our everyday lives?

  • Catholic Answers Live - Women in the New Testament
    Questions Covered:
13:38 - What does it mean when the Bible talks about women being servants to men?
23:17 - What is your take on Mary Magdalene and Jesus’ encounter after he rose from the dead? Was Jesus slighting her when he told her not to cling to him because he had not yet ascended to the Father?
30:21 - It seems like the world likes loud, confident, successful women better. Am I a bad woman because I am quieter and in the home? Is there evidence in Scripture for what womanhood should look like?
37:35 - Why didn’t Jesus make any women priests?
44:47 - If Jesus had wanted women priests, he would have chosen his own mother, who was perfect and would have made the ideal priest.
47:00 - Have you written about women in the Old Testament, as well? I admire many women in the Old Testament.

  • Catholic Answers Live - The Eucharist in Scripture
    Questions Covered:
12:09 - When you look in the Old Testament, God is very clear about not eating human flesh. I don’t believe in the Eucharist because God wouldn’t ask us to eat his flesh. Isn’t that right?
17:10 - You said that we take Jesus’ words literally, “This is my Body, this is my Blood.” Why does the Church tell us that we do not need to receive both species?
20:47 - How do you explain to a non-Catholic why apostolic succession and the priesthood are required to have a valid, real Eucharist?
29:17 - Can you explain the fourth cup? Was the cup the one offered to Christ during his Crucifixion?
33:20 - Do you this disbelief in the Eucharist goes deeper than poor and incomplete catechesis? Isn’t it also connected to the changes in liturgy?
36:34 - Why isn’t the Eucharist mentioned in the Apostles or Nicene Creeds?
40:58 - Do you think that Vatican II made a mistake in allowing people to receive Communion in the hand?
46:33 - Is what Jesus gave the apostles at the Last Supper the same Eucharist that we receive now? Is it different because now he is the Risen Christ?
49:21 - I don’t understand why Catholics believe that they are worshipping Jesus in Adoration. It is a piece of bread since no consecration is happening.
52:51 - When we say, “Lord, I am not worthy to receive you, but only say the Word and my soul shall be healed,” what are we saying? What is the “word”?

  • Quote Me S1: E4, Elizabeth, "He Was So Lucky You Are His Parents, Because I Know How Much You Loved Him”
S1: E4, Elizabeth, "He Was So Lucky You Are His Parents, Because I Know How Much You Loved Him”
What do you say when someone you love loses a child to miscarriage?
Lindsay lost her second child, Ethan, to miscarriage in 2012. In remembrance of Ethan during this Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month, she shares her experience of a friend reaching out with words that brought comfort. Honoring the dignity of the life of the child and acknowledging the reality of the parents’ loss shows a respect for life that is often missing in people’s attempts to console, but these can make all the difference for a grieving parent (or grandparent, aunt, uncle, sibling, etc.)
From Elizabeth, “He was so lucky you were his parents, because I know how much you loved him.”
In this episode, Lindsay mentions her old blog, Young Married Mom, where she processed her loss and curated a list of resources. She also talks about this article on Verily, but didn’t mention this recent one at CatholicMom.com.
The books Lindsay recommends are her own, Don’t Forget to Say Thank You: And Other Parenting Lessons That Brought Me Closer to God; After Miscarriage: A Catholic Woman’s Companion to Healing and Hope by Karen Edmisten; and Blessed Is The Fruit of Thy Womb: Rosary Reflections on Miscarriage, Stillbirth, and Infant Loss by Heidi Indahl.

  • Lisa Hendey & Friends - Episode 69 - Jeannie Gaffigan "When Life Gives You Pears"
On this week's show, we laugh and cry with director, producer and comedy writer Jeannie Gaffigan as we discuss her new book When Life Gives You Pears: The Healing Power of Family, Faith, and Funny People.
    About the Book:
In 2017, writer, director and producer, Jeannie Gaffigan’s life came to a crashing halt when she was diagnosed with a life-threatening brain tumor. The mother of five kids, six if you include her husband, could only think "I might die," as she sat in the ER in star-covered sweats too whimsical for the seriousness of the situation. Thankfully, Jeannie and her family were able to survive this time of crisis and now she's ready to share her miraculous story; how she had the brutal conversation with her children, her parents, and close friends; how she came to terms with feeling powerless with the difficult recovery of being bedridden and not eating for a month; how she started to realize the importance of her relationships; and ultimately, to learn, and relearn to be more present in life.
Visit Jeannie Gaffigan at her website, Twitter, or Instagram.
