Breakfast Wrap: Is Trump interfering in Australian universities?

Listen Later

The Australian Academy of Science is warning the federal government to diversify research collaboration away from the United States.

Academics from at least eight universities working on joint research projects with US institutions have been sent a questionnaire seeking to identify their alignment with US domestic and foreign policy aims.

Plus, former Australian Ambassador to the US, Joe Hockey, joins Radio National Breakfast to discuss the evolving state of US-Australian relations, including the impact of tariffs on key sectors like pharmaceuticals and agriculture.

Hockey also reflects on the future of the AUKUS deal and the challenges of negotiating with the US, particularly under President Donald Trump.

Meanwhile, the United States and Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen are both vowing escalation, after the US launched air strikes at the weekend.

US President Donald Trump ordered the air strikes on Yemen's capital, Sana'a, to deter the rebels from attacking vessels on one of the world's busiest shipping corridors.

Over 30 people have been killed, according to the Houthi-run health ministry.

And Israel has categorically rejected a report by United Nations-backed human rights investigators that alleges Israel used "disproportionate violence against women and children" during the war in Gaza.

It also accused Israeli soldiers of carrying out rape and sexual violence against Palestinians.

The report released last week also accused Israel of committing "genocidal acts" by intentionally and systematically destroying embryos, sperm and other biological matter at a key reproductive clinic in Gaza.

Coverage and analysis of national and international events.
