Jim Chalmers will use a speech today to argue the tariffs are both 'senseless and wrong'.

It comes as he prepares for his fourth budget right before the upcoming federal election.

And an ABC Four Corners investigation has exposed systemic failures in Australia's $20 billion a year childcare industry, ranging from child abuse to failure to enforce regulation. 

But is at the heart of the investigation is evidence that many private providers are prioritising profit over safety.

The former chair of the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission, Professor Allan Fels, says urgent government action is required to improve the sector.
