  • #61: The Two Spiritual Paths – Impersonalism vs Personalism

Imagine choosing between coca cola and freshly pressed sugarcane juice; just like our tastes differ, so do our spiritual paths. Some prefer to relate to the ocean of light or the impersonal path, while others embrace the personal form of the Supreme Lord.

While at first the paths run parallel to each other—recognizing our true identity beyond the physical body and caring for the welfare of all—as we progress, a crucial decision awaits. Will we accept the existence of a Supreme Person or immerse ourselves in the ocean of light?

Guided by the most authoritative yoga texts, namely the Bhavagad-gita, we look at which of these two spiritual paths lead to the highest perfection. We shed light on the rise of impersonalism as a social trend, with common catchphrases such as “We are all one” that often overshadows a deeper understanding of spirituality.

Whether you're a true seeker or a curious observer, join us as we explore the path less traveled in pursuit of spiritual growth and enlightenment.

    Highlights:

    • (4:17) Directly approaching the Lord for the final word; anecdote about fresh sugarcane juice at a market.
    • (11:39) We discuss the choice between worshiping the impersonal void or the Supreme Person. We need guidance from real spiritual authorities.
    • (26:52) Balakhilya shares a story from a lecture in Norway where two girls refused to hear anything about God in a meditation class. Regardless of whether we like it or not, God exists.
    • (31:04) The true spiritual seekers go against the flow
    • (35:49) We discuss the pitfalls of impersonalism and the conclusion that we are all God
    • (41:40) Impersonalism has become a social trend with very popular catch phrases, and it’s being promoted by the most influential people
    • (46:51) Individual sincerity leads to finding a perfect teacher who guides and satisfies our desire to find the truth.

    • #60: We Need to be Perfectly Attached: Finding Shelter in the Eternal

“I was in a concrete bunker when the world outside exploded in a huge nuclear holocaust. I was watching my relatives and friends melting into the ground around me, and I was completely helpless”

Reflecting on a dream Ruben just had, we dive into the topic of how to actually help others—and how to deal with feelings of insecurity in relation to this world. Many spiritual seekers think that non-attachment is the goal, while Balakhilya explains that it’s quite the opposite.

Yes, material attachments to friends, family and spouse have the power to break our hearts completely. But simultaneously, to actually heal and calm our hearts, we need to cultivate a perfect spiritual consciousness. Because ultimately, the only stability in this unstable world is our loving attachment to the Supreme Power.

      Highlights:

      • (6:33) The material world is unstable and unpredictable. Life can change suddenly, like we saw in the war between Russia and Ukraine. We must accept this reality and find true stability.
      • (12:17) We have faith in the effectiveness of vitamin C despite lack of tangible proof, and similarly we should have faith in the spiritual process despite that we don’t have direct experience of it’s effectivenes
      • (19:53) The soul has inherent qualities; like water inherently is wet. One such quality is that we get attached very easily.
      • (26:39) We discuss the concept of attachment, and how we need to cultivate attachment to the permanent which is beyond the material dimension
      • (41:51) The spiritual world is perfect and filled with perfect love, free from pain and imperfections. We can enter there now, and inspire others to do the same.
      • (54:43) Balakhilya’s friend left the Bhakti Yoga process for several years to enjoy a sense-gratifying lifestyle, but was suddenly diagnosed with ALS and came back to his spiritual practices. He said the disease was the perfect disease for him—it stopped him in his tracks and made him become serious about life.
      • (1:10:00) Martin Luther King emphasized the power of light to overcome darkness.

      • #59: Connecting with the Divine: The Real Meaning of Yoga

Yoga has become increasingly popular in recent years, with people of all ages and backgrounds seeking its numerous benefits, such as reduced stress and anxiety, increased flexibility and strength, and improved overall health.

But what is the essence of yoga, and its ultimate goal?

In this episode of Breaking Trail, Balakhilya shares his journey towards discovering his true self and finding true happiness through Bhakti yoga. Or more specifically, how he met his spiritual guide and how that changed his entire perspective on life.

You’ll hear us discuss the importance of having an active relationship with the Supreme Soul, and how that differs from the impersonalist teachings that are often mistaken to be the final word of yoga. We delve into the roots and history of yoga, how it became popular in the West, and look at some of its many benefits.

Additionally, we discuss Jesus and his role as a perfect yogi and how following his teachings can lead to a joyful life.

        Highlights:

        • (6:23) Yoga originates from Vedic teachings and has been around since the beginning of creation, as stated in the Bhagavad-gita. Yoga became popular in the West during the late 60s/early 70s with the rise of the hippie movement.
        • (23:27) Balakhilya’s spiritual journey meeting his spiritual guide: he was introduced to chanting and Bhakti yoga, which corrected his misconceptions and changed his outlook.
        • (33:47) Balakhilya had an enlightenment about being God, but was corrected by his spiritual guide who taught him about a higher truth, namely having a loving relationship with the Supreme Soul.
        • (39:41) The message of the material world is ever-present, but studying scriptures can provide the truth about the real essence of life
        • (57:43) Yoga means linking or union, specifically between the individual soul and the Supreme Soul. It involves harmonizing one’s will with and having desire to please the Supreme Person, leading to a perfect relationship. Work needs to be done on our side to reach that perfection.
        • (1:02:24) The soul's true essence is the need for love, care, and protection. A vague concept of “energy” by itself cannot fullfill this need, but a perfect and fully satisfying relationship is required, based on devotion.
        • (1:09:47) We reflect on the importance of humility in yoga and reference Lord Jesus Christ as an example of a perfect yogi.

        • #58: Moving Forward in Spiritual Life: What’s the Next Step?

You’ve come to realise that you want to live a more spiritually oriented life. Now what?

This episode is centred around a question a friend of Ruben had for him, namely what the next step is if one wants to develop spiritually. What practices are important, and if I’d like to make some form of plan; how should it look?

Answering the question, we discuss the danger of relying on our senses to come to understand the Absolute Truth. We need to rely on authentic knowledge and perfect teachers rather than relying on our imperfect senses, the societal norms or what our friends and family tell us. Having plans and goals and plans is all good, but we need to ultimately tune in to the plan that the Supreme Person has for us.

Balakhilya also shares personal examples and gives very practical tips for daily spiritual practices such as hearing and chanting mantras as well as remembering that the self is not the body; which are the first three and most important processes of Bhakti Yoga.

          Highlights:

          • (1:08) What to do after deciding to implement a spiritual practice in life? Knowledge is the first step, including knowing that we can’t rely on our senses.
          • (7:54) Material pleasures are temporary and not satisfying to the soul, exemplified by smoking and its negative health effects
          • (15:14) The first steps in bhakti yoga are hearing and chanting mantras and the Absolute Truth, followed by remembering; for example, reinforcing the truth that you are not your physical body
          • (26:42) The bhakti yoga process involves devotional practices, all fully structured and arranged by the Supreme Arranger
          • (38:43) Climbing Mount Everest costs around $65,000 to $100,000 and 12 people already died trying this year (5 more are missing). But despite the investment required and risks involved, those who are motivated will do whatever it takes to make it. This teaches us that desires are essential, and we need to increase our desire for spiritual fullfillment to be successful.
          • (46:39) We must ultimately surrender to the plan of the Supreme Person to have success, and be flexible and adaptable
          • (1:00:46) Cultivate beneficial desires for a better life

          • #57: The Decline of Morality: Lessons from a Father Who Lived the Golden Rule

“Treat others the way you want them to treat you” - a simple and powerful philosophy, but also just an empty philosophy if we fail to actually implement it.

In this episode, we discuss the decline of morality in modern society through the example of Balakhilya’s father, who lived by the golden rule and always upheld a high standard of moral living. Through this perspective we delve into topics such as forgiveness, false ego, and the importance of practice in implementing a spiritual philosophy into one's daily life. You’ll also hear us question the current societal norms and how the lack of adherence to biblical principles has led to chaos and degradation.

Through anecdotes and reflections around the life of Balakhilya’s father, we hope to offer valuable lessons on how to live a morally upright life and become a more compassionate and loving person.

            Highlights:

            • (1:56) Cherry-picking the Bible makes you the decision maker, there's no authority
            • (6:01) The Golden Rule is a symbol of the topmost standard; we should treat others as we want to be treated ourselves
            • (12:06) Balakhilya shares how his father’s guiding light was the golden rule. He never treated anyone bad and always saw people’s circumstances before judging them.
            • (22:30) We discuss the societal and personal degradation which is caused by lack of morality and principles
            • (32:31) The golden rule requires spiritual empowerment to be implemented. Transcendental matters cannot be understood by worldly reasoning.
            • (39:08) On the 16th chapter of Bhagavad-gita: We're diamonds in the rough, and need to cleanse ourselves. Practice is necessary, and to take responsibility for our actions.

            • #56: What If You’re Caught in an Avalanche?

You’ve just been caught by an avalanche, and you're now rock stuck underneath a deep layer of hard-packed snow. You're helpless. You're stuck.

There is nothing you can do materially. And thinking positively will not change the reality of the situation you’re in. But you're still you; the spirit soul inside the body. You are still feeling and longing.

So what CAN you do? You, the spirit soul, can find spiritual shelter and comfort through meditating on transcendental sound. This supreme protection doesn't weigh anything in your backpacking, doesn't cost anything, and never fails.

And it might just save your life.

              Highlights:

              • (0:40) What are you going to turn to at the time of death? Transcendental sound gives real protection.
              • (12:34) Extreme skiers (and similar people) make huge efforts in preparations to minimise the risk of avalanches. But spiritual training is even more important, because at some point we will all have to face death.
              • (23:55) Like a fish on land who gets brought back to the ocean, meditation on yoga sound brings us back to our real home.
              • (32:41) Which yoga sounds, or mantras, should I meditate on? We refer to the topmost mantras with the spiritual potency to purify you and establish your long lost connection with the Supreme.

              • #55: Thankfulness Leads to Determination

We have a choice to make in life. I can be immersed in meditation upon the things I don’t have - I can meditate upon how difficult my life is, how I don’t deserve the hardships that come my way - and fuel the fire of anger.

Or I can meditate upon the things I do have, and be thankful for that: we have a human body to use for spiritual realization, we have arms and legs with which we can serve others, and since you are reading this you have been given the opportunity to dive into the deepest wisdom and answers to life’s challenges.

Real thankfulness comes with appreciation, warmth, and care for others. And with determination to take advantage of that which you have received.

                Highlights:

                • (1:50) If you want to be thankful, you’ve got to see the value in what you have received. Thankfulness comes with a lot of vision.
                • (6:38) A thankful attitude is a starting point. For example, we should be thankful for the food that allows us to keep our body strong and healthy to help and serve others.
                • (18:15) The first foundation of thankfulness is seeing our own faults, and experiencing that we’re not better than anyone else. The more unworthy I feel, the more thankful I feel for what I do receive.
                • (24:40) The second foundation of thankfulness is knowing that even though we’re unworthy, we are perfectly loved and are of limitless transcendental value.
                • (35:01) I should be thankful for all the temporary things in my life to the degree that they help me hold on to the things which are eternal, that I won’t leave behind when I die. Namely what's in our heart.
                • (45:53) Thankfulness is is a spiritual quality. Balakhilya shares a story about how he went to a Porsche Corvette show in the 80s to sell dried fruit and nuts, and met a truly thankful person.

                • #54: The Prostitute Who Became a Saint

500 years ago in India lived a spiritual personality of extraordinary character and devotion, called Haridas Thakur. Due to their unfortunate team-spirit, both the Muslims and Hindus rejected him as he failed to abide to any particular process or religion. Joined by their envy of Haridas, they planned to send a prostitute to his home and defame him by catching him in the act of engaging in sexual activity with her.

Needless to say, their plan completely backfired. In the end, Haridas Thakur became even more glorified, while the prostitute became a great spiritual teacher whose advice was sought by people from all over the country.

This is a story of how to deal with unwanted desires and lust, how faith turns the most dangerous threat into an amazing opportunity, and how we can be of real service to others when we have a strong spiritual foundation. This is the story of Haridas Thakur and the prostitute who became a saint.

                  Highlights:

                  • (0:42) The bottom line of this story is to show the result of having full faith in the process of chanting the mantras. Introduction to who Haridas Thakur was.
                  • (7:08) What happened when the Muslims and Hindus combined together to try to defame Haridas
                  • (16:45) Despite the fact that the prostitute didn’t at all come to Haridas for spiritual enlightenment (quite the opposite, she came to defame him), Haridas has mercy on her and remained in his cave just to give her a chance to be purified.
                  • (24:25) It’s an illusion that satisfying our desires will somehow stop them. Desires will always come like rivers incessantly flowing into the ocean, but if we simply are undisturbed, like the ocean, then they will not affect us.
                  • (30:34) The example of when some friends of ours gave people access to an unlimited supply of delicious waffles; material desires will never satisfy us but simply burn us out. However, engaging in a spiritual activity will gradually purify and satisfy us.

A relative to a friend of Ruben is right now on his deathbed, in the later stages of cancer. And sooner or later, you and me might also be in a similar situation—facing the reality that at any time, one of our loved ones will leave this world.

We might feel confused, uncertain, uncomfortable, or simply overwhelmed by emotions. But when this time comes, it’s time for us to lift ourselves above all of that and be of real service as that person is leaving this world.

This episode is a recording from when Ruben asked Balakhilya:

What to tell a dying man?

                    Highlights:

                    • (0:00) Ruben introduces the situation of his friend’s relative leaving this world at any time; there is nothing better you can tell somebody than the truth.
                    • (7:41) ‘You shall know the truth, and the truth shall set you free.’ Absolute truth is as purifying as the transcendental mantras.
                    • (17:03) We need to start by making it clear that a person is not their body. No matter if we feel unqualified to share the truth, we need to try; a person hanging of a cliff will not care whether or not the person saving him is a 16-year or kid.
                    • (25:08) Forget about your insecurity, trust the higher power to guide you correctly; Balakhilya have never given a talk where he afterwards hasn’t felt that he could have explained things in a better way.
                    • (34:57) Every one of us are going to die. In society today, we just hide away the old people in homes so we don’t get to experience the reality of (and suffering involved in) old age and death
