Fans in Attala County and surrounding areas will have plenty of hometown pride on display as the College Football Playoff Fiesta Bowl Semifinal kicks off Thursday, Jan. 8, featuring the Miami Hurricanes and the Ole Miss Rebels.

Several local players are representing their hometowns as members of the teams in this high-stakes College Football Playoff semifinal.

Miami lineman Markel Bell, who got his start at Holmes Community College, will anchor the left tackle position for the Hurricanes.

The Ole Miss Rebels showcase several local standouts on the roster: Caleb Cunningham from Weir (Choctaw County), Percy Lewis from McAdams, Ricky Fletcher of Durant (Holmes County Central) and Cortez Thomas from Lexington (Holmes County Central).

The Fiesta Bowl kicks off Thursday, Jan. 8, at 6:30 p.m. at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona, with coverage on ESPN.

A basketball game between McAdams and Noxapater has been rescheduled due to the threat of inclement weather.

The game, originally scheduled for Friday, Jan. 9, will now be played Thursday, Jan. 8, at McAdams High School.

Our statewide flu rate is up.  And it’s exploded in part of the local area.  The State Health Department says, for the week ending December 27th, just over 5 per cent of patients seeing their doctors had flu-like symptoms, an increase from just under 4 per cent the week before.  But the most dramatic jump was in the public health district which includes Attala, Holmes, Carroll and Montgomery counties and much of the Delta.  There, the flu rate, which was already the highest in the state at over 11 per cent, skyrocketed to almost 27 per cent.  State Epidemiologist Dr. Renia Dotson says it’s hard to explain..

“That has been a conundrum for us for years, why we see such increased rates.  I don’t have a good handle on the actual immunization rates there.  We haven’t really been able to pinpoint exactly a cause….”

In the public health district which includes Leake and Neshoba counties, the flu rate is now almost 7 per cent.  But it’s fallen to 5 and a half per cent in the district which includes Winston and Choctaw counties.

The CDC now classifies flu activity in Mississippi as “high”.  But it could be worse. And in most of the country, it is.  Only nine states have a lower flu rate than Mississippi.  All of our neighboring states have a “very high” number of flu cases.

The Mississippi Legislature opening its 2026 session in Jackson today with House Speaker, and Kosciusko native, Jason White making clear that a phased-in approach to school choice will be his top priority this year.

He says it and other education proposals will be bundled into a single bill. Supporters of school choice say the plans would give parents more control, while opponents warn they could divert money from public schools and reduce accountability.

Over in the Senate, Lt. Gov. Delbert Hoseman has his own ideas about improving the educational experience for students by allowing them to transfer from a poorly rated public school district to a better one.

Lawmakers are also facing pressure to address long-term funding concerns in the Public Employees’ Retirement System, which affects teachers, law enforcement officers and other public workers. Teacher pay is likely to be debated again as Mississippi continues to rank low nationally in educator salaries.

Other major issues expected this session include health care access and insurance costs, particularly in rural areas, renewed discussion of mobile sports betting, election law changes, government accountability measures and economic development initiatives.
