WEIR, Miss.–A 19-year-old died in a shooting on New Year’s Eve in Weir, in Choctaw County.

The name of the victim has not been released.

WTVA reported the shooting happened just after midnight, but the exact location was not chared by the Choctaw County coroner’s office.

Neither the Weir Police Dept. not the Choctaw County Sheriff’s Dept. had released any information on the exact location of the shooting or the circumstances.

KOSCIUSKO, Miss.–A grass fire was reorted on New Year’s Eve on Hwy. 12 west near the VFW.

The Attala County Fire Dept. was dispatched just before 2:30 p.m.

When a unit arrived a firefighter reported the fire was about a half acre and there was a yard and a structure (not specified) that were near the fire.

Another fire truck came to help keep the fire away from the yard and structure.

The fire was contained within about 20 minutes.

We’re seeing an uptick in flu cases in Mississippi.  After trending behind 2024’s numbers for most of the fall, now that winter’s here, we’ve caught up.  Our statewide flu rate has jumped to 3.9 per cent for the week ending December 20th and that’s almost the same as it was this time last year.   Doctors who report to the State Health Department treated fewer patients than the week before but had more with flu-like symptoms, a total of 570 suspected flu cases.    And in a week’s time, the CDC has raised our level of flu activity from minimal to moderate which is still one of the lowest in the nation.  By comparison, flu activity in Alabama is classified as high and in Louisiana, Tennessee and Arkansas it’s very high.

Locally, in the public health district which includes Attala, Holmes, Carroll and Montgomery counties, the flu rate has dropped from about 12 and a half per cent to around 11 per cent, still the highest in the state.   But in two other local areas, we’ve seen increases in the flu rate—now over 7 per cent in the district which includes Winston and Choctaw counties and up to 3 and a half per cent in the district which includes Leake and Neshoba counties.

UPDATE: One person was transported from the crash-site to Baptist Attala where they were then flown to another hospital.

According to those on scene, a total of five vehicles were involved in the wreck. It is unclear how the crash occurred. Mississippi Highway Patrol will be in charge of that investigation.

The roadway is now clear for travel.

A multi-vehicle crash involving an 18-wheeler was reported just before 4 p.m. on Highway 35 N, approximately one mile past Culpepper Funeral Home in Attala County.

Attala County deputies, EMS, and the Attala County Fire Department were dispatched to the scene. Multiple injuries have been reported. At least one person became trapped inside a vehicle.

First responders applied a tourniquet to one injured individual to provide aid until an ambulance could arrive.

Highway 35 N is completely shut down in the area as emergency crews work to treat and transport patients and clear the wreckage.

Motorists are advised to avoid the area and seek alternate routes. Further details will be released as they become available.
