Trees fell on the square and other locations around Kosciusko Wednesday afternoon as a storm blew through.

The storm brought strong winds that caused the tree on the side of the square to fall and damage three vehicles.

Kosciusko Police responded to the scene. No injuries were reported.

Other trees were knocked down near The Citizen’s Bank, Jack’s, and 2nd Avenue.

The City of Kosciusko is moving into the installation phase of its emergency backup generator project following recent approvals by the Board of Aldermen.

The approximately $300,000 project is largely funded through a federal grant administered by the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) and FEMA, which the city originally applied for two years ago.

Following a reverse auction conducted through Central Bidding, the board selected Taylor Power Systems as the equipment provider and approved Edgar Electrical to complete the installation work.

The project includes two primary units:

City Hall: A permanent backup generator will be installed to maintain municipal administration power during outages.

Wastewater System: A second generator will be located at the city’s wastewater lagoon. Mounted on a trailer, city crews will be able to transport the mobile unit throughout town to connect to transfer switches installed at five critical lift stations, powering aerators and transfer pumps during extended power failures.

Holmes County will be back under an extreme heat warning today and for the rest of the local area, a heat advisory is posted.  Highs will be near 100 with a heat index around 110.    But, just like yesterday, some thunderstorms are expected in this part of the state and could help to take the edge off the heat while providing some much needed rain.  Some of the storms could be severe with damaging winds possible.

Around 1:39 PM, first responders were dispatched to a call about a car that drove into a ditch on Pope St. in Ethel. No injuries occurred, and the driver was able to climb out of her car without issue.

About ten minutes later at 1:49, they received another call for an injury that had occurred on Pope St. as well. A man had lacerations on his left leg. It is unclear at the moment whether this incident is at all related to the car accident. EMS was called to the scene to provide aid.
