KOSCIUSKO, Miss.–A structure burned Friday afternoon in the western part of Attala County.

It was unclear whether the structure was a residence. It was described by firefighters on the scene only as a “wooden structure”.

The call was dispatched just after 5 p.m. for a fire on Attala Rd. 4171, which is near Hwy. 12. Upon arrival, Attala County firefighters reported that the structure was already fully involved.

After using a lot of water to try and get the fire out, refills were necessary.

The fire was finally reported out just after 7 p.m.

No injuries were reported.

EXTREME HEAT WARNING shown in purple

All but five counties in Mississippi remain under an extreme heat warning today but some relief is finally in sight.  The National Weather Service says the heat wave should peak on Wednesday as rain chances return for the latter half of the week.

NWS says afternoon highs in Durant and Philadelphia could reach 100 today with upper 90s forecast in Kosciusko and Carthage.  Durant could again hit the century mark on Tuesday.  And on Wednesday, highs near 101 are forecast in Durant and near 100 elsewhere.

The heat index is expected to climb to 108 in Durant and Carthage today and to 107 Philadelphia and 106 in Kosciusko.  On Tuesday, heat indices will range from 106 in Kosciusko to 107 in Philadelphia, 108 in Carthage and 110 in Durant.  And the heat index is forecast to top out at 107 in Philadelphia Wednesday, 108 in Kosciusko and Carthage and 110 in Durant.

A three-vehicle crash involving a semi-truck and two passenger vehicles was reported at the intersection of Hwy 35 and Hwy 19 in Attala just before 2 pm.

Attala County Fire Department, Attala County Sheriff’s deputies, EMS, and MHP responded to the scene.

One driver became trapped in their vehicle and was extricated by firefighters. The driver was transported by ambulance to a hospital, and their condition is currently unknown.

Drivers should use caution in the area as crews work to clear the roadway.

Previous heat waves in central Mississippi this summer have been driven primarily by high humidity resulting in heat index readings well into the triple digits at times.  But the dangerous heat stress settling in this weekend will be mainly the result of actual temperatures climbing to their highest point of the season.

While afternoon highs in the upper 90s are forecast for the local area today, Durant could see 101 Saturday with the temperature reaching 100 in Kosciusko, Carthage and Philadelphia.   The heat index is forecast around 106.

Sunday, even hotter conditions are expected.  Durant’s high may reach 103 with readings of 101 forecast in Kosciusko, Carthage and Philadelphia with a heat index ranging from 105-110.

On Monday, highs near 100 with a heat index up to 110 are expected areawide.

The extreme heat warning posted for a few counties in the Delta will likely be expanded to include other parts of the state.  For now, a heat advisory continues through Sunday for most of Mississippi including the local area.

Mississippi Blood Services is bringing a lifesaving mobile blood drive to Kosciusko today Friday at  the Attala County Library from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.

Mississippi Blood Services notes that local hospital patients rely on volunteer donors, as a single donation can help save up to three lives.

As part of the “Race to Save Lives” Back-to-School Giveaway, anyone who donates blood at a participating mobile drive between Aug. 1 and Aug. 31 will automatically be entered for a chance to win one of two $500 Visa gift cards. Presenting donors will also receive a thank-you gift at the time of donation.

Donors are asked to bring a photo ID, eat a healthy meal, and stay hydrated prior to donating.

At about 2:30 PM, the Attala County Fire Department was notified of a Wood Fire on 2101 “Stonewall Rd” near Ethel. An Entergy crew was reportedly on scene when the fire began, and it is believed that a downed power line was the cause.

The fire covered roughly 2 acres in a thicket with limited access points for ground crews. A quick line was established around the perimeter in hopes that it would hold until Forestry arrived to handle further preventative measures.
