Jason Blaylock with the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks stopped by The BreckFast Show Wednesday morning to preview the upcoming Attala County Wildlife Extravaganza.

Blaylock shared information on how the event came together, what hunters need to know about bringing in deer, turkey, and fish for official record scoring, and what families can expect from nearly 40 outdoor vendors, live calling demonstrations, and interactive wildlife exhibits.

The event is taking place this Friday (Sept. 25) and Saturday (Sept. 26) at the Attala County Coliseum.

Gas prices in Mississippi are at their highest point since May and are threatening to reach a level not seen in more than four years.  AAA says the statewide average this morning is $3.99.  That’s up 10 cents in the past week.   In May, the average price peaked at $4.01, the most Mississippians have paid since July of 2022.  Locally, several counties are already averaging above $4, including Attala at $4.09, Carroll at $4.07, Neshoba at $4.05 and Winston at $4.01. The average price in Choctaw County is $3.99, it’s $3.97 in Holmes County, $3.95 in Leake County and $3.94 in Montgomery County.

GasBuddy.com, which looks at prices city by city, is still listing Philadelphia as having the cheapest gas around, as low as $3.39.  The phone app says the lowest price it’s found in Carthage is $3.85, in Louisville $3.91 and in Kosciusko, $3.94.

UPDATE: Firefighters arrived to find a pile of saw dust on fire and were quickly able to extinguish the flames. The cause of the fire is unknown.

There is currently a fire at the saw mill in Ethel on Mill Rd.

Attala County firefighters and other volunteers were dispatched just before 3 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 22.

Crews are currently responding to the scene. The extent of the fire and any damage is unknown.

This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.

Absentee voting is now open for the upcoming November election.

In-persons absentee voting is open through Saturday, Oct. 31 at noon.

Additionally, Circuit clerk offices are required to be open Saturday, Oct. 3, and Saturday, Oct. 24 from 8:00 am – noon to allow for absentee voting.

People may vote absentee for several reasons, including if they will be out of town on election day, if they are temporarily or permanently disabled or if they are 65 or older.

Anyone with questions can check their status online or call the Secretary of State’s office at 1-800-829-6786.

The Storm Prediction Center now says severe weather in Mississippi is unlikely today.  A Level-1 “marginal” risk of isolated severe storms with damaging winds has been shifted farther to the east into Alabama, although a few thunderstorms with gusty winds are still possible in the local area this afternoon and evening ahead of a cold front.

It was a chance for the people in northern Attala County to find out why their power keeps going off.

“They’re not being provided reasonably adequate service,” says Public Service Commissioner Chris Brown who was at a town hall meeting in Carmack last night.  Entergy-Mississippi’s CEO Haley Fisackerly told the crowd of more than 200 people that the company is working to reduce the number of outages system-wide by making major improvements in the power grid, using money that large industrial customers like Amazon will be paying for electricity as their data centers come online across central Mississippi.

“We announced a program this past fall that we’re implementing now called Superpower Mississippi, where we’re increasing our reliability budget by over 50 percent up to $1 billion.  That 50 percent increase is being covered 100 percent by these data centers that are coming into the state, 100 percent at no cost to you.”

Entergy’s goal is to reduce outages by 50 percent over the next five years by doing more tree-trimming near power lines, using stronger poles to better withstand high winds and installing technology to make the power grid smarter.

The Public Service Commission says part of the problem in northern Attala is the way the electrical system is set up in that area.  When a power line is knocked down or a transformer blows, service is lost until repairs can be made– unlike many other parts of the state which now have redundancy built into their electrical grid to re-route power after an outage to restore service more quickly.

With both teams entering the matchup undefeated and ranked in the latest Top 25 polls, a big weekend at Davis Wade Stadium gets even bigger as Kosciusko sports history takes center stage.

Ted Milton: MSU Hall of Fame Induction

The festivities begin Friday, Sept. 25, at the M-Club Sports Hall of Fame Gala, where former Whippets baseball coach Ted Milton will be formally inducted into the Class of 2026.

A Diamond Dawgs standout from 1969–72, Milton hit .311 with 23 home runs and 96 RBIs while helping lead MSU to its first College World Series appearance in 1971. He also earned honors as the baseball program’s first Academic All-American. Following his time in Starkville, Milton came to Kosciusko as baseball coach, where he guided the 1974 Kosciusko Whippets to a state baseball championship.

“We were very fortunate to have some great ballplayers,” Milton recalled during a return visit to Kosciusko. “Like the old saying goes, you can’t win the Kentucky Derby with a mule. We were lucky to have some thoroughbreds here. It was just a great group of guys that knew how to play and knew how to win. They weren’t going to be denied.”

Jacob Peeler: SEC Sideline Return

Also this weekend, 2002 Kosciusko graduate Jacob Peeler will be on the visitor’s sideline as wide receivers coach for the Missouri Tigers.

Before building a coaching career with stops at Cal, Ole Miss, Texas State, and Missouri, Peeler was an offensive line standout at Holmes Community College. He played every offensive snap across the 2002 and 2003 seasons, earning All-America, First-Team All-NJCAA Region 23, and First-Team All-State honors while helping lead the Bulldogs to a 2002 MACJC State Championship.

Peeler, who was inducted into the Mississippi Community College Sports Hall of Fame in 2023, completed his playing career at Louisiana Tech and later earned a master’s degree from Mississippi State, making Saturday’s SEC matchup a homecoming in more than one way.

Adding even more local flavor to Saturday’s action, Mississippi State safety Dre Riley, who has emerged as a key defensive contributor for the Bulldogs, played his sophomore season in Kosciusko. He currently ranks among the top 10 on the team in total tackles (9 tackles, 7 solo) while sharing the team lead in interceptions, highlighted by his clutch fourth-quarter pick against South Carolina last weekend that helped seal the win for State.

Kickoff between Mississippi State and Missouri is set for 6:45 p.m. Saturday night at Davis Wade Stadium, with live television coverage on the SEC Network.

The Attala County Library, in partnership with Bank of Commerce, will present “Bank on Your Future for Teens!”  Wednesday, Sept. 30, at 3:30 p.m.

The interactive class is designed to help local teenagers take charge of their personal finances. During the session, participants will learn the fundamentals of banking, budgeting, smart spending habits, and saving strategies for the future.

The event will be held at the Attala County Library, located at 201 S. Huntington Street in Kosciusko.
