FLOOD THREAT THROUGH TONIGHT

The severe thunderstorm watch for parts of eastern Mississippi has been cancelled after storms moved through earlier today, knocking down trees in the Kosciusko area and in Winston County.  The National Weather Service says some storm redevelopment is possible tonight.

The National Weather Service has cancelled the flood watch that had included much of the local area today.  It says there’s no longer a threat of heavy rain which could cause flooding.

But a large part of Mississippi, including this area, has been placed under a Level-1 “marginal” risk of isolated severe storms with damaging wind gusts on Monday.

A larger part of the local area will be under a flood watch today as a cold front helps to trigger showers and thunderstorms.  The watch, in effect through 7 pm, includes Attala, Holmes, Leake, Neshoba, Winston and Choctaw counties.  The National Weather Service says one to three inches of rain could fall across the entire area.

Leake and Neshoba counties remain under a flood watch through this evening with one to three inches of additional rainfall possible.  Tropical moisture is in place across much of Mississippi and an approaching front is helping to trigger showers and thunderstorms today.   In Attala, Holmes and Winston counties, the rainfall should be limited to one to two inches.

The Level-1 “marginal” risk of isolated severe storms with damaging winds has been trimmed back but still covers a large part of the local area.

A crash involving a Mississippi Highway Patrol vehicle occurred Thursday afternoon at the intersection of Attala Road 2247 (Old Trace Road) and Attala Road 3122. Attala Deputies, Attala Firefighters, and EMS were called to the scene just before 3:30 p.m.

The MHP trooper was reportedly in pursuit when another vehicle pulled out in front of the patrol unit, resulting in a collision.

The driver of the civilian vehicle was trapped and had to be extricated by the Attala County Fire Department. The driver reportedly could not feel the left side of their body and was transported by ambulance to the hospital.

The vehicle that was said to be pursued by MHP apparently left the area and was not immediately located. The crash remains under investigation.

Around 1:35 AM on Thursday, police responded to a call from someone on Lowry St. about a woman beating on their door and windows. She had reportedly left the property by the time the call was made, but the property owner wanted police to ensure she was gone. No further reports of the woman were made.

At 7:50 AM, a caller reported a disturbance at the Cannonade Apartments. A man had been beating on a door for about an hour, attempting to gain entry into an apartment. Police advised him to leave the property and not return. Later, at 8:20 AM, police received another call from a woman at the apartments who reported there was a man at her door who would not leave. It is unknown if the second call is related to the first.

Just before 8:20, a driver ran off of Center Crossing Road near Lobutcha Bridge, landing in a ditch. It is unknown if the driver was injured or if there were any passengers.

While most of today’s flooding rains have moved off into Alabama, the National Weather Service says more downpours are possible on Friday along with a Level-1 “marginal” risk of isolated severe storms across most of Mississippi.  Friday’s storms could develop along a weak front which is forecast to stall out and heavy downpours will be possible resulting in a renewed threat of flash flooding.  One to three inches of additional rain could fall across Leake, Neshoba, Winston and southeastern Attala counties on Friday with one to two inches elsewhere in the local area.
