Help Happens Here, a new online directory connecting local service providers with customers, will celebrate its official grand opening Thursday, June 18 at 10 a.m. at the Kosciusko Attala Partnership on North Natchez Street.

Staff members from Help Happens Here and Boswell Media will be on-site to answer questions and provide information about the platform. Businesses that sign up during the grand opening events will be eligible for a limited-time 60-day free trial.

Help Happens Here is designed to connect people who need services with trusted local professionals and businesses. Categories include plumbers, electricians, HVAC technicians, contractors, excavation services, lawn care providers, custom monogramming, custom cakes and cookies, event services, and many more.

Community members and business owners are invited to attend, learn more about the directory, and explore opportunities to grow their reach through the new platform.

A former Kosciusko Whippet is taking the reins of a Mississippi high school football program.

Franklin County High School announced this week the hiring of Jamario Winters as its new head football coach.

After graduating from Kosciusko in 2007, Winters continued his football career at Ouachita Baptist University before transferring to Ole Miss, where he finished his collegiate playing career.

His coaching career has included stops at his alma mater, Kosciusko High School, as well as Choctaw County and Starkville High School.

Winters was part of the coaching staff at Choctaw County that won the 2024 3A State Championship, giving him championship experience as he prepares to lead the Bulldogs program.

Franklin County will open the 2026 football season Friday, Aug. 28 on the road against rival North Pike.

What had been Tropical Storm Arthur dissipated near the southeastern Texas coast last night.  However, the threat of heavy rain and severe storms will continue for Mississippi as the remnants of the storm push through the state today.

A flood watch continues for portions of the local area including Leake and Neshoba counties.  Three to five inches of additional rainfall are possible today across Leake, Neshoba, Winston and southeastern Attala counties with one to three inches in other parts of the local area.

There’s also a marginal risk of isolated severe storms across most of Mississippi today and again on Friday.   Brief, weak tornadoes will be possible today.

The importance of the Natchez Trace in shaping the United States was the focus of Tuesday night’s installment of the “Echoes of History: America 250 Lecture Series” at the Mary Ricks Thornton Cultural Center in Kosciusko.

The lecture, titled “The Natchez Trace,” was presented by Dr. Susan Gaunt Stearns, an associate professor of history at the University of Mississippi. Stearns examined the Trace’s role in the nation’s development, particularly its influence on travel, trade and the economy during the late 18th and early 19th centuries.

“This talk examines three components of the role of the Natchez Trace in the development of the United States,” Stearns wrote in the program. “In the 1790s, thousands of boatmen from Kentucky and Tennessee trekked northward along the Trace through the Chickasaw homeland.”

Stearns explained how the migration of travelers transformed the Chickasaw economy and created opportunities for guides, innkeepers and others who provided services along the route. She also discussed how missionaries, settlers and conflicts helped bring stability to the region, while the Forks of the Road in Natchez became the South’s second-largest slave market.

Before the lecture began, Stearns emphasized the Trace’s significance to the nation’s commerce.

“You don’t have the Mississippi River trade without the Natchez Trace,” she said. “And so we’ll be talking about that tonight.”

The “Echoes of History: America 250 Lecture Series,” presented by the Attala Historical Society, continues Tuesday, June 23, with “From Trace to Trade: The Economic Story of Kosciusko & Attala County,” presented by retired Chancellor Judge John Clark Love Jr.

The free lecture series is part of the nationwide America 250 celebration commemorating the 250th anniversary of the United States.

The GROW Summer Enrichment Program at Long Creek Elementary School is off to a fantastic start, with two successful weeks already completed and many exciting opportunities still ahead. Serving 30 participants ranging from rising 1st through 7th grade students, the program is designed to provide engaging, hands-on learning experiences that extend beyond the traditional classroom setting.

Mrs. Lora Fleming, School-Site Coordinator, ensures that students are participating in a variety of academic and enrichment activities each day. Additional GROW Staff include Mr. Rodney Anderson (Math Activity Leader), Mrs. Bobbie Stewart (ELA Activity Leader), and our enrichment activities/ interactive experiences in the areas of STEM, arts and crafts, music, drama, and more, are coordinated by Mrs. Vivian Roby and Mrs. Ilona Saffold. Mrs. Tomika Landfair assists in the classrooms, daily, providing additional support wherever needed. Mrs. Lena Guyton and Mrs. Jasmine Ball are also valued members of the GROW staff.

The GROW team has worked diligently to create nontraditional learning experiences that make education both meaningful and enjoyable. Students are actively engaged and have expressed excitement about learning in new and creative ways.

The program would also like to extend sincere appreciation to the community volunteers who have helped make the summer even more memorable. Supervisor Willie Perteet (Beat 4) visited students to discuss the importance of road and bridge maintenance. Students enjoyed a backhoe demonstration and had the opportunity to get an up-close look at the equipment. Mr. Garcia and Mr. Jones assisted Supervisor Perteet with the demonstration. Mrs. Kristie Massey of Attala County Soil and Water, accompanied by Ms. Deanna Sanders, a Master Gardener, provided students with an educational session focused on plants and environmental awareness. Students also participated in a mini basketball clinic led by Coach Ashley Brown, Leake High School Basketball Coach. Participants learned basic rules, skills, and fundamentals of the game while enjoying active, hands-on instruction. Coach Triplett also assisted with the clinical.

Although the GROW Summer Enrichment Program concludes on June 25, there are still many fun, educational, and exciting activities planned for the weeks ahead.

A vehicle was reportedly rear-ended on Hwy 12 E near Attala Hardwoods Monday just after noon. Attala deputies, Attala firefighters, and MS Hwy Patrol were dispatched to the scene. One person complained of shoulder pain and was taken to the hospital by personal vehicle for evaluation.

At 1:09 p.m., deputies, firefighters, and EMS were alerted to an ATV crash on Kings Road in Ethel. EMS was canceled when it was discovered that the ATV rider had gone to the emergency room by personal vehicle. According to authorities, the individual suffered road rash but did not have any life-threatening injuries.

Around 4:45 p.m. MHP, EMS, Attala County Fire Department, and Attala deputies responded to a one-vehicle rollover crash on Hwy 35 South near King Road. The vehicle came to a rest in an upright position. No injuries were reported.
