A flood watch for the southern half of Mississippi has been extended to the north to include Leake and Neshoba counties through Thursday evening.

The National Weather Service is forecasting two to four inches of rain through tomorrow south of I-20 with one to two inches possible north of I-20 including this area.   But the threat of significant flash flooding is expected to spread north on Thursday with four to six inches of rain possible over a much larger part of the state including most of the local area as a tropical system tracks across Mississippi.

Also on Thursday, a few isolated severe storms will be possible with a chance of weak tornadoes.  A Level-1 “marginal” risk has been posted for the entire state.

A crash involving a pickup truck and a semi truck slowed traffic on Hwy 12 near Sonic Monday morning in Kosciusko.

Police, EMS, and MS Highway Patrol responded to the two-vehicle crash just before 9:00 a.m. Monday.

The pickup ended up in a grassy area with noticeable damage. The cause of the crash is unknown. No injuries were reported, and both vehicles were towed from the scene.

On Monday, June 22, the National Park Service will temporarily close a section of the Natchez Trace Parkway from Kosciusko (Mile Marker 165) to French Camp (Mile Marker 181) in Attala and Choctaw counties in Mississippi.

The road will be closed to all traffic as construction crews work to make repairs on the parkway.

The current closed section of the parkway, north of French Camp from mile marker 181 to U.S. Highway 82 (MP 204), will open prior to this new section being closed.

The closure is expected to last through the duration of the repair work, with updates provided as conditions change.

The hot and steamy weather of last week will give way to wet and cooler conditions with several rounds of heavy rain expected across Mississippi.  While localized flash flooding will be possible in this area, where one to three inches of rain could fall, the biggest threat will be across the southwestern quadrant of the state including the Jackson area, where rainfall totals could reach five inches.

The rain and cloud cover will help to hold temperatures below 90 degrees across most of the local area this week.  Highs in the lower 80s are forecast today and tomorrow climbing into the upper 80s on Wednesday and Thursday.

PHILADELPHIA, Miss.–If you plan to attend the Neshoba County Fair, you should expect to encounter speed bumps just south of the fairgrounds on County Rd. 414, near Gate 4.

Sheriff Eric Clark says the speed bumps are a temporary measure to protect people walking in the area.

“Over the past several years, the Sheriff’s Office has received multiple complaints regarding traffic flow and vehicle speeds near the cabins constructed adjacent to the Fairgrounds. In addition, pedestrian traffic has increased significantly on the roadway east of Gate 4 during the Fair season, creating safety concerns for residents and visitors,” read a post from the Sheriff’s Office.

Clark said that once the fair is done the speed bumps will be removed.

“As the Fair approaches, motorists are encouraged to use caution, reduce their speed, and remain alert for pedestrians, especially small children, who may be present in and around the roadway,” read the post.

KOSCIUSKO, Miss.–Two traffic incidents were reported Friday night in Kosciusko. Just before midnight it was reported that two cars were racing back and forth on Veterans Memorial Drive.

The cars were reported to be racing between the area of Subway and the intersection with Hwy. 12.

Just after that a truck and treail rig was reported to have been driving recklessly near the intersection of Hwy. 12 and Hwy. 35. The person who called police said that the truck had been “all over the road”.

Police did pull that rig over. Police did not report an arrest.

KOSCIUSKO, Miss.–Several people reported hearing gbunshots Friday night about 11:30 at Glendale Apartments in Kosciusko.

Both Kosciusko Police and the Attala County Sheriff’s Office were sent to the apartments and one person may have been arrested.

After that, another person was reported possibly carrying a gun in the complex. It was unclear if an arrest was made in that incident.

No one was reported injured.

About 1 Saturday morning more shots were reported. Both officers and deputies were called back to the complex.

Several cars were pulled over that may have been associated with the second incident. One person may have been detained and at least two cars were held by police and towed.

PHILADELPHIA, Miss.–Philadelphia Police Chief Eric Lyons teased that more people are likely to be arrested after a drug bust that was announced Thursday.

In a Facebook post from the department the exact words used are that “more arrests are expected”. The Facebook post indicated that more people are still wanted with the initial bust.

Seven people so far have been charged after an investigation that took about a year. The busts were made in conjunction with the Neshoba County Sheriff’s Office and the Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics.
