Around 9:20 on Wednesday morning, the KPD was notified about someone trespassing and vandalizing a home on Lucas St. The suspect reportedly broke a window, then trespassed into another yard to rummage through a shed. Kosciusko police located the subject and transported him to the police department. It is unknown if any charges were filed.

Breezynews story on June 8, 2026:

A fire early Sunday morning caused damage to an office inside Winters Funeral Home on Fenwick Street in Kosciusko.

Kosciusko Police accompanied a keyholder to the business to check on fire alarm that had been activated and found the building filled with smoke.

The Kosciusko Fire Department responded to the scene around 4:15 a.m. and was able to contain the fire to one office. However, water used to extinguish the blaze covered the floor throughout the building. No injuries were reported.

Kosciusko Fire Chief Duane Burdine said the cause of the fire is still under investigation, but it is believed to have been electrical in nature.

A home on Gilliland Street near the intersection of Smythe Street was destroyed in a fire Wednesday afternoon.

Kosciusko Fire Department, EMS, and Kosciusko Police were dispatched to the scene just after 5 p.m. on June 10, 2026.

Everyone was able to get out of the home safely, and no injuries were reported.

KFD Chief Duane Burdine says the cause of the fire is currently unknown and still under investigation.

A standout freshman season has earned former Kosciusko Whippet Mary Kimble Price national recognition.

Price, now a member of the Jones College softball team, has been named a 2026 NJCAA Division II Second Team All-American. The honor comes just one week after she was selected as an NFCA All-American.

Price was one of three Jones College players to receive NJCAA All-American honors, joining teammates Madison Sawyer and Mabry Eason. The selection continues a streak of national recognition for the Bobcats, who have had at least one NJCAA or NFCA All-American every year since 2012.

The Kosciusko native put together an impressive freshman campaign, batting .399 while leading the team with 77 hits and 69 RBIs. She also blasted 18 home runs, added 13 doubles and posted a .977 fielding percentage.

In addition to her All-American selections, Price earned NFCA All-South Region honors and was named to the All-MACCC First Team.

Price helped lead Jones College to a 50-12 overall record during the 2026 season. The Bobcats advanced to the NJCAA Division II Softball World Series, where they finished fourth nationally.

Around 9:00 on Tuesday night, the Kosciusko Police Department was notified of a potentially drunk driver around Madison St. who reportedly almost hit a bicyclist. With help from various callers reporting the driver, police were able to locate the vehicle and pulled him over at Wendy’s on Hwy 12 around 10:25 PM.

No accidents or injuries were reported to be caused by the driver.

DANGEROUS HEAT STRESS FRIDAY-SUNDAY

We’ve already had plenty of hot and humid weather this spring, even some triple digit heat index readings.  But  the National Weather Service in Jackson says the heat and humidity this weekend will be the worst so far with temperatures in the mid 90s and a heat index that could push into the danger zone, possibly topping 105.

The worst of the heat stress is forecast from southeast Mississippi up into the Delta where a heat advisory will be in effect.   But even in this part of the state, the Weather Service says people engaged in prolonged outdoor activities this weekend could wind up with heat exhaustion.

While some showers and thunderstorms will be possible this weekend, a weather system moving in early next week could produce some flash flooding.  NWS says between two and four inches of rain could fall sometime in the Monday to Wednesday time period.

Around 7:00 AM, the Attala Sheriff’s Office was alerted to an accident on Hwy 14 W involving a car and an 18-wheeler. No injuries were reported.

Later, at about 4:00 PM, there was a minor accident in parking lot of Sonic on Hwy 12. No injuries were reported.

At about 6:45 PM, first-responders were notified of an accident on Hwy 35 S. The driver ran off the road, but there were no injuries reported.
