In celebration of America’s 250th birthday, the Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) is inviting the public to put their creativity on display with the Star-Spangled Digital Message Sign (DMS) Contest by submitting their patriotic, America-themed, safe-driving messages to run during the Fourth of July holiday week.

“We’re excited to celebrate America 250 while reminding travelers that safety is everyone’s responsibility,” said MDOT Executive Director Brad White. “Driver safety, especially during holiday travel, remains MDOT’s highest priority. This is a fun opportunity for Mississippians to share their patriotic spirit and help maximize safe-driving conditions.”

The contest is open now, and entries must be submitted by June 15. The America-themed winning entries will be featured on MDOT’s DMS signs across Mississippi highways from July 1-5, 2026, helping spread both patriotic pride and roadway safety during the Independence Day holiday travel period.

Traffic safety messages appear on DMS boards along highways and interstates throughout Mississippi. Messages submitted may revolve around America-themed songs, characters and culture. Any local emergency messages and traffic updates automatically override scheduled messages on the DMS boards.

There is no limit to the number of messages you can submit, but below are some guidelines to remember:

“Drive smart and celebrate safely,” said White. “America 250 starts with you.”

Gas prices in Mississippi continue their slow fall.  AAA says the average price statewide is down about 12 cents in the past week, now at $3.84.  The auto club says, in this part of the state, the only county below the statewide average is Leake at $3.83.    Next is Montgomery County at $3.89, followed by Neshoba County at $3.91, Winston County at $3.92, Holmes County at $3.95, Attala County at $3.96, Carroll County at just under $3.97 and Choctaw County at just over $3.97.   Those are all countywide average prices.  GasBuddy.com says the cheapest gas in this part of the state is in Philadelphia where you can fill up for as little as $3.67 a gallon and in Carthage prices are as low as $3.68.  In Kosciusko, the best bargain Gas Buddy found was $3.89.

Kosciusko will once again welcome youth baseball teams to town this summer for a series of All-Star and state tournament games at Hugh Ellard Park.

According to Parks and Recreation Director Todd Ables, later this month, Kosciusko will host the Dixie Youth 6U District Tournament, scheduled for June 19–20.

Later in the summer, Kosciusko will also serve as a host site for two larger state tournaments, bringing a significant number of teams and games to the area.

Additional details such as participating teams, schedules, and admission prices have not yet been released.

A white 2015 Ford F-350 bucket truck was stolen from Deanco Auction on Monday, June 1 at around 4:45 a.m.

The truck may have damage to the front end on the grill after driving through a locked gate, and it was last seen traveling north on Holland Avenue.

A Ford Mustang caught fire while traveling on Hwy 12 West Monday morning at about 8:45 a.m.

The driver was able to get out of the vehicle and to safety with no injuries. Kosciusko Fire Department and Kosciusko Police quickly responded to the scene.

The cause of the fire is unknown at this time but seems to have started under the hood of the vehicle. It does appear the vehicle is completely totaled.

The entire local area is now under a Level-2 “slight” risk of severe storms today and tonight.  Damaging winds and hail will be possible.   A severe thunderstorm watch has been posted for much of north Mississippi.

In the west, heat index readings up to 105 degrees are possible as temperatures in the 90s combine with high humidity to make conditions uncomfortable and potentially dangerous.  The worst of the heat stress is forecast from southeastern Mississippi up through the western part of the state including western Holmes County.

The team will begin the season Thursday, July 31 on the road at Ethel.

The first home game of the season will be held Monday, Aug. 4 against Winona.

KOSCIUSKO, Miss.–A hit and run wreck was reported on Hwy. 12 near the Fitness Co. gym Saturday night just before 9 p.m.

No one was reported seriously hurt.

An Attala County deputy called the wreck in, saying that a car had left the scene.

The car was reported pulling into a gas station later. Kosciusko Police were called to take over the investigation.

It was unclear if any arrests were made.
