KOSCIUSKO, Miss.–A burned vehicle was discovered Saturday afternoon by a passerby in Attala County.

Deputies were asked to look into it.

The vehicle was found on Attala Rd. 4103 by someone who is in the area often. It was not clear if it was the landowner. The person told dispatchers that the vehicle looked like it had been there a couple of days.

The call was about 10 minutes before 4 p.m.

UPDATE: From Philadelphia Police: The missing person was found Friday night about 10 p.m. and is safe.

PHILADELPHIA, Miss.–A 17-year-old girl missing for five days is being sought by her family and the Philadelphia Police Dept., who put out an alert for law enforcement to be on the lookout for her Friday night.

London Scott is described as 5 ft. tall and 180 lbs. She wears glasses and has dreds.

She was last seen Tuesday leaving the Reunion Court Apartments in Philly with a white female in a car.

It was unclear where she was going and police did not have an accurate description of what she was wearing.

Philadelphia Police are asking for tips.

As the threat of flash flooding tapers off in Mississippi, concerns about damaging winds and hail return with heat stress expected to be another weather issue starting today.  The National Weather Service has posted a Level-1 “marginal” risk of isolated severe storms today for the western portion of the local area including Holmes and Carroll counties and again on Monday for Attala, Leake, Neshoba, Carroll, Montgomery, Choctaw and northeastern Holmes counties.

NWS is also warning about dangerous heat stress across western and southeastern Mississippi through Monday with triple digit heat index readings possible for the first time this spring.

A Greenlee Elementary School teacher from Attala County is among six Mississippi State University College of Education students recognized with 2026 Mississippi Professional Educators scholarships.

Lauren Fancher, a sixth-grade math teacher at Greenlee Elementary School, received a $1,000 graduate scholarship from Mississippi Professional Educators as she continues work toward a master’s degree in educational leadership with a concentration in school administration at Mississippi State University.

Fancher holds a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Mississippi University for Women and has been a member of Mississippi Professional Educators since 2024. Her selection places her among educators from across the state recognized for advancing their training while continuing to serve in Mississippi classrooms.

Founded in 1979, Mississippi Professional Educators is the state’s largest professional organization for educators, serving roughly 12,000 teachers, administrators and support personnel. The group awards scholarships annually to student members at Mississippi’s colleges and universities, including up to 60 $1,000 graduate awards for educators pursuing advanced degrees in-state.

This year’s Mississippi State recipients include educators from Attala, Louisville, Philadelphia, Union and the Western Line school districts. Alongside Fancher, other scholarship winners are pursuing advanced degrees in areas ranging from school administration and special education to educational policy and school psychology.

At Mississippi State’s College of Education, officials say the scholarships highlight the ongoing demand for advanced training among working educators and the university’s role in supporting teachers who remain in Mississippi classrooms while pursuing graduate study.

The Kosciusko Police Department has made an arrest following an investigation into the possible sexual assault of a child.

Authorities say they received a report alleging that a child had been sexually assaulted, and a forensic interview was conducted with the child as part of the investigation.

As a result of the investigation, 55-year-old Umar Waheed of Mobile, Alabama, was charged with grooming a child for lustful purposes.

Waheed was taken into custody in Mobile by the U.S. Marshals Service and has since been extradited to Mississippi. He is currently being held at the Leake County Correctional Facility on a $100,000 bond.

Kosciusko Police expressed that protecting children is their highest priority. Officials said the department is committed to protecting children from any and all harm and will continue to hold accountable anyone accused of causing harm to a child.

“Our top priority is always to protect all children from any type of harm from any person,” says KPD Chief Greg Collins.

Around 7:20 PM authorities were dispatched to a domestic disturbance on Maple Ave. A woman was attempting to retrieve her sister’s things from her sister’s boyfriend’s house, but he wouldn’t allow it. No physical altercation was reported.

At 7:45 PM, officers were notified of a dispute occurring on Third Ave. A female was attempting to leave home but was being stopped by a male who put hands on her.
