Young cheerleaders from across the community will all come together this week as the Little Whippet Cheer Camp gets underway Thursday, May 28.

Hosted by the Kosciusko High School cheerleaders, the camp will be held Thursday from 2:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. and Friday, May 29, from 8:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m.

The camp is open to children ages 3 years through 5th grade, and participants do not have to attend Kosciusko schools to take part. Throughout the two-day camp, attendees will learn cheers, chants, and routines alongside members of the Kosciusko High School cheer squad.

A parent showcase is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Friday, giving families the chance to see what campers have learned.

In addition, Little Whippet cheerleaders will have the opportunity to cheer alongside the high school squad during the first home football game of the season, including a special pregame performance.

A minor accident occurred in the Sullivan’s parking lot on Highway 12 around 9:30 AM. Two vehicles were involved, and there were no injuries.

At about 10:30 AM, authorities responded to a disturbance between a mother and her adult daughter. The daughter was reportedly being belligerent, but no weapons were involved.

Authorities also responded to an altercation around 11:30 AM between a husband and wife on Highway 14 West near the Williamsville area. No charges were filed.

Attala County Deputies responded to a shooting incident that was reported on Monday evening near the Ethel Quick Stop.

At approximately 7:22 p.m., a caller reported that someone had fired a gun at their son while at the store. No injuries were reported.

According to the caller, the people believed to be responsible left the scene in two vehicles. The caller reportedly followed the vehicles and said they believed the alleged shooter would be headed toward the Hannah Heights area.

An investigator spoke with the individuals involved. No charges were filed.

The Mississippi Highway Patrol saw a busy weekend for the Memorial Day holiday according to Public Affairs Officer, Bobby Land.

Extra patrols were in place from May 22-25 aimed at cracking down on speeding and distracted or impaired driving.

MHP issued 4,908 citations, and 591 of those were for no seat belt or child restraint. There were 74 DUI arrests made.

Troopers investigated 190 crashes. One of those resulted in a death on Sunday, May 24 in Monroe County.

The Dinosaur Experience is bringing its popular live dinosaur show to the Attala County Library Tuesday, May 26 at 6:00 PM.

Since 2018, this interactive production has entertained thousands of children across the region with life-sized walking dinosaurs, including a playful baby T. rex that loves meeting guests and causing a bit of prehistoric mischief.

Families can expect an interactive, high-energy show filled with laughter, surprises, and great photo opportunities. Kids will get the chance to see dinosaurs up close while parents enjoy an easy, stress-free community event.

Kosciusko baseball placed three players on the MAC Class 4A All-State teams after a season that ended in the 4A North State Championship Series.

Junior pitcher J.D. Cummins earned First Team honors, finishing the season with a 2.00 ERA in 42 innings, striking out 75 batters while allowing just 22 hits.

Senior utility player Aiden Howard also made First Team after a strong two-way season. At the plate he hit .366 with a 1.086 OPS, 4 HR, 33 RBI, and 43 runs. On the mound, he added a 2.17 ERA in 19.1 innings and 22 strikeouts.

Senior pitcher Braxton Smith earned Second Team honors after a dominant year on the mound, posting a 1.54 ERA over 45.1 innings with 74 strikeouts.

The trio helped lead Kosciusko through a strong postseason run that ended in the 4A North State Championship Series, marking a standout year for the program.
