A green 2019 Volkswagen Jetta reported stolen out of the state of Kansas was recovered Thursday, May 7, in the parking lot of Walmart in Kosciusko.

Kosciusko Police located the vehicle and identified two men who had been traveling in it, Chorion Smith and Marcus Roberts.

Chorion Smith, 29 of Jackson, was charged with possession of a weapon by convicted felon and possession of stolen property with a total bond of $150k.

Marus Roberts, 44 of Lexington, was charged with possession of a weapon by convicted felon with a bond of $100k.

A county road east of Kosciusko is currently closed to thru traffic.

Knox Road, also known as Attala County Road 5255, is partially closed while crews work to cut trees.

The road is open to up to Shields Road, but blocked just past it where the railroad tracks cross.

There is also a closure near where the road intersects Attala Road 5216.

A bicyclist was struck by a vehicle on the Natchez Trace Parkway near mile marker 169 and Stonewall Road Friday morning and transported by ambulance to Baptist Memorial Hospital-Attala.

The incident was reported just before 10:30 a.m. when a passerby found the bicycle rider lying in the roadway unresponsive. The identity of the rider is currently unknown.

Attala County Firefighters, Attala Deputies, EMS, and Natchez Trace Park Rangers were dispatched to the scene.

The bike rider was transported by ambulance to the Baptist Memorial Hospital-Attala Emergency Department, and his condition is currently unknown.

Evidence of a vehicle hitting the bicycle was found, but no vehicle was located at the scene. Authorities are investigating the incident. We will update you here when more information is available.

A familiar name to Kosciusko baseball fans is among the newest members of the Mississippi State M-Club Sports Hall of Fame.

Former Diamond Dawgs standout and Whippets head coach Ted Milton has been selected for induction into the Class of 2026, the university announced this week.

Milton, who starred at Mississippi State from 1969–72, is being honored for a standout collegiate career that helped pave the way for his later success in coaching at the high school level in Mississippi. During his time with the Bulldogs, he was a key offensive contributor, finishing his career with a .311 batting average, 23 home runs and 96 RBIs. He was also part of Mississippi State’s first-ever College World Series team in 1971 and became the program’s first academic All-American.

After his college career, Milton became a coach at Kosciusko, leading the Whippet baseball team to the 1974 State Championship.

That championship run remains a significant moment in Kosciusko baseball history and helped cement Milton’s legacy in the community.

Milton’s Hall of Fame selection comes as part of an eight-member class that also includes football standouts Fletcher Cox, Johnthan Banks and Daniel Boyd; basketball’s Mario Austin and Kunshinge Sorrell-Howard; women’s golf standout Kathe Kingston; and volleyball player Aimee York Strickland.

The group will be formally inducted during the 2026 M-Club Sports Hall of Fame Gala on Friday, Sept. 25, in Starkville, ahead of Mississippi State’s home football game against Missouri.

A charity motorcycle ride and bike show benefiting Children’s Miracle Network is set for Saturday, May 9, at the Carthage Coliseum.

Registration for the ride begins at 8:30 a.m., with kickstands up scheduled for 10:00 a.m. Entry fees are $20 for a single rider and an additional $5 for passengers with included for participants.

After the bike ride and lunch, the bike show begins. The entry fee for that is $5. Categories for the competition are: two-wheel class, three-wheel class, and best in show.

A 50/50 drawing will also be held during the event. Tickets are available for $1 each.

All proceeds from the event will benefit the Children’s Miracle Network. The event is sponsored by Walmart and Black Diamond Racing of Brandon.

A series of history lectures tied to the America 250 celebration will take place throughout the month of June in Kosciusko.

Mayor Tim Kyle announced the lecture series will begin June 2 and continue every Tuesday evening at 6 p.m.

The events will be held at the Mary Ricks Thornton Cultural Center, located across from City Hall, and are being organized by the community’s historical society in conjunction with the Kosciusko-Attala Partnership.

Speakers will cover a range of topics, including the history of the Natchez Trace, early trade routes, and significant historical sites in Attala County.

City leaders encourage residents to attend the free lectures to learn more about the region’s history and its role in the nation’s development.

The death of prominent Leake County insurance agent, Charles David Weber, is being investigated by the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation with assistance from the Leake County Sheriff’s Office.

According to Sheriff Randy W. Atkinson, the death investigation is being conducted due to an apparent gunshot. Leake County Coroner, Earl Adams says Weber’s body has been sent to the state crime lab for an autopsy.

In a statement, the MBI said they are currently gathering information and collecting evidence surrounding the death that occurred on Wednesday, May 6, 2026. The investigation is open and ongoing.

The old Attala County Jail is being demolished. According to Brad Whittington, vice president of the Attala County Board of Supervisors, the building was a safety hazard, and they didn’t want anyone to get hurt. The jail was unusable for its original purpose, so it was better to simply demolish the building and reclaim the plot. At the moment, there are no plans to build anything in its place.

The Attala County Jail was originally shut down in 2016 after two failed attempts at building a new jail.
