ATTALA COUNTY, MS — The Attala County Farmers Market is preparing to open its new season with a kickoff meeting for local growers, producers, and artisans. The meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, May 31, at 10:00 a.m. at the MSU Extension Office.

The market welcomes vegetable and fruit growers, gardeners, home cooks, bakers, canners, craftspeople, fishermen, and producers of meat, dairy, and eggs. Current members will have the opportunity to renew their membership, which remains $25 for a full year or $5 per day for casual participants.

The average price of gas in Mississippi is up this morning for the 25th day in a row.  But the increases have been getting smaller.   AAA says the latest hike in the statewide average price was one cent and yesterday’s increase was less than a penny.  We’re now at $3.56 a gallon.

Since prices started climbing at the end of February, they’ve gone up an average of $1.03, a little over four cents a day.  But in the past seven days, those daily increases have averaged closer to two cents a gallon.  (Mar. 18: +3.6 cents, Mar. 19: +4.5 cents, Mar. 20 +2.5 cents, Mar. 21 +1.7 cents, Mar. 22 + 1.5 cents, Mar. 23 + .7 cent and Mar. 24 + 1 cent)

Locally, drivers can still fill up for less in Leake County which, according to AAA, has the state’s lowest countywide average price, slightly less than $3.43.   Compare that with Holmes County, which has the ninth-highest countywide average at $3.66.   Attala County isn’t far behind at $3.64.  The countywide average price in Neshoba County is just under $3.51.

Kosciusko Police are searching for two suspects following a weekend break-in at a local business.

According to authorities, K-Vape was burglarized during the early morning hours of Sunday, March 22. Attala County Communications received alerts from both the alarm company and the business owner, then alerted police.

Surveillance footage (video below) appears to show two individuals dressed in dark clothing and masks enter the business, steal merchandise, and quickly flee the scene.

Officers arrived shortly after being notified and discovered the building had been broken into. A search of the surrounding area was conducted, but the suspects were not located.

Authorities are asking for the public’s help in identifying and locating the individuals involved. Anyone with information is urged to contact the Kosciusko Police Department at 662-289-3131 or Central MS Crime Stoppers at 601-355-TIPS(8477). The City of Kosciusko is bringing history to life in a BIG way thanks to a grant from the Mississippi Humanities Council as part of the America250 Mississippi initiative. The $7,550 award will fund the project “Power of Place: Kosciusko, Mississippi and the Original Natchez Trace,” highlighting the city’s deep roots in America’s story.

As the only incorporated city where the original Natchez Trace once ran directly through its downtown, Kosciusko holds a unique place in history—and now, that history is about to become something you can see, walk, and experience. The project will install permanent historical markers across downtown, transforming the entire area into a living classroom where the past comes to life.

Visitors and residents alike will be able to stand in the very places where history happened—from the path once traveled by the Choctaw people to the grounds where Andrew Jackson camped, and the hometown of civil rights pioneer James Meredith. These markers will connect with existing audio and video tours, creating an immersive experience that tells the story of America through the lens of one Mississippi town.

More than just a history project, this initiative will strengthen community pride, expand educational opportunities, and boost tourism by turning Kosciusko into a destination where history isn’t just remembered—it’s experienced.

This official America250 project was made possible by a grant from the Mississippi Humanities Council, through support from the State of Mississippi.

Kosciusko Police Officers Victor Moore and Wilbert Nelson have completed Crisis Intervention Training (CIT), a program designed to better prepare law enforcement to respond to individuals experiencing mental health crises.

The training included both classroom instruction and hands-on scenario-based exercises, giving officers practical experience in recognizing mental health issues and applying de-escalation techniques in real-world situations. CIT aims to provide officers with the tools needed to approach sensitive encounters with greater awareness, communication, and care.

With the addition of Moore and Nelson, there are now six officers within the Kosciusko Police Department who have received CIT certification. Kosciusko Police Chief Greg Collins said the department plans to continue expanding the training among its officers.

“We want our officers to be as prepared as possible when responding to these types of calls,” Collins said. “This training helps them slow situations down, connect with people, and ultimately keep everyone safer.”
