It was just over a week ago that the average price of gas in Mississippi edged above $3 a gallon.  Since then, the pain at the pumps has continued and we’re now sitting at $3.44 this morning.  Mississippi’s prices have risen faster than several other states, mainly in the Midwest, where gas is 10 to 20 cents cheaper.  Don Redman with AAA says the reason for that….

“It’s typically all related to refinery costs as well as taxes on fuel…”

Redman says the cost of refining the gas varies from one part of the country to another.  He says while refineries serving the Midwest typically use West Texas Intermediate oil…

“Some of the fuel we’re getting in Mississippi is refined from Brent crude which is almost $10 more expensive per barrel right now…”

The increase this morning in the statewide average price in Mississippi is about three and a half cents.  Redman says it’s likely to keep going up as long as oil supplies are disrupted by the war with Iran…

“I’m looking at future delivery for April.   We could be looking at another 20-cent increase in gasoline prices between now and April based on the futures prices…”

Mississippi, which often has had the cheapest gas in the country in recent years, has now fallen out of the top ten, now ranking 11th in terms of the lowest pump prices.  Within the state, the local area is doing better than most.  Winston and Leake counties rank in the top five for lowest prices averaging 11 to 12 cents below the statewide average.  The auto club says Neshoba County is averaging about four cents below while Attala County is above the statewide average by just over a penny.

KOSCIUSKO, Miss. — Bank of Commerce is set to celebrate the opening of its new Kosciusko branch with a community event on Tuesday, March 24, inviting local residents, business leaders, and customers to take part in the festivities.

The event will run from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and will feature a live remote broadcast from Breezy 103, along with refreshments, prize giveaways, and a ribbon-cutting ceremony hosted by the Kosciusko Attala Partnership Chamber of Commerce.

Bank officials say the new branch represents a continued investment in Attala County and the surrounding area.

“We are excited to celebrate our new presence in Kosciusko and look forward to serving the people and businesses of this community,” said Bryan Thornhill, president and CEO of the bank. “Community banking is about relationships, and we are proud to expand our commitment to this region.”

The celebration will include hot dogs, chips, and drinks beginning at 11:30 a.m., while supplies last. Guests can also register for prize giveaways throughout the week leading up to the event and on the day of the grand opening. Winners do not need to be present, and no bank account is required to enter.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony is scheduled for 11:30 a.m.

David Blair, senior vice president and mortgage loan officer at the Kosciusko branch, said the bank is focused on providing a personalized experience for customers.

“I’ve served customers in this area for many years, and the financial experience Bank of Commerce provides is second to none,” Blair said. “We look forward to helping families and businesses reach their financial goals.”

According to Thornhill, the new branch is part of the bank’s broader effort to strengthen its presence across north and central Mississippi.

The price of gas in Mississippi has now gone up 18 days in a row.  AAA says this morning’s increase in the average price statewide is about six cents, putting us at a three and a half year high at a little over $3.40.  The auto club says the last time we were paying that much was in August of 2022.   Since the increases began at the end of February, the average price across Mississippi has gone up a total of 88 cents.   And we continue to fall behind other states where prices haven’t risen as fast.  For example, AAA says gas is selling for about 12 cents a gallon less in Arkansas right now.  A total of nine states, mostly in the Midwest, have cheaper gas than we do.

Attala County has implemented a burn ban, effective immediately through April 16, according to Attala County Fire Chief Tim Cox.

According to the Mississippi Forestry Commission: Anything with an open flame that produces an ember is not allowed during a burn ban. The wind can carry floating embers away from the original fire and start a spot fire up to one-half mile away from the burning area. This includes:

Kosciusko High School will host an informational meeting for parents of incoming freshmen Tuesday, March 17, at 5:00 p.m.

The session will take place at the high school, located at 415 Veterans Memorial Drive in Kosciusko.

Parents in attendance will learn about key topics including graduation requirements, course selections, ACT standards, state testing expectations, and opportunities for dual credit or enrollment. The meeting will also cover Active Parent and Decision Day procedures.

“His Last Days: The Passion Play,” presented by Redbud Springs Cornerstone Church, is returning for its 41st year.

This year’s event will be held Thursday, April 2 – Saturday, April 4.

The event has become an Easter Tradition not only in Kosciusko, but throughout central and north Mississippi.

Churches from several different communities bring groups to experience the portrayal of events leading up the crucifixion.

The play is performed on the lawn of the church at the corner of Washington and Natchez Streets in downtown Kosciusko.

Shows begin at 8:00 pm each night.
