Gas prices are still edging higher although the latest 24-hour increase is one of the smallest we’ve seen since the end of February.   AAA says the average price statewide this morning is $3.348, up 2.7 cents since Sunday.   Even though it’s a relatively minor increase, it’s historically significant because it marks the first time since September 1, 2022 that the auto club’s average price has climbed above $3.34 a gallon.

Stormy weather across this part of central Mississippi Sunday night left behind some damage.  In Philadelphia, emergency management is reporting a tree which fell on a trailer on Sistrunk Avenue.  Also in Neshoba County, trees and branches were knocked down across from the Choctaw Fire station.  In Winona, a tree fell on an apartment on Kent Street.   Power lines and trees were reported down across Grenada and a home on Clay Road had roof damage.

A home in the McAdams community was destroyed by fire Sunday night.

The Attala County Fire Department was dispatched to a structure fire on Attala Road 4273 at approximately 8:45 p.m. on Sunday, March 15. When crews arrived, they found the home fully engulfed in flames.

Attala County Fire Chief Tim Cox said the house was a total loss and is considered unlivable, though some personal belongings may be able to be salvaged.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Firefighters responded to several woods fires across Attala County on Sunday, March 15, many of which were caused by trees coming into contact with power lines.

At 3:09 p.m., the Attala County Fire Department and Zama Volunteer Fire Department were dispatched to Attala Rd. 5102 for a reported shed and tractor fire. When crews arrived, they found a woods fire instead, with no structures or vehicles involved. The fire burned approximately four acres before forestry crews were requested to assist with containment.

At 4:03 p.m., firefighters were called to Attala Rd. 4140 after a trash fire got out of control and spread into nearby woods. The blaze was contained to about one acre.

Later at 4:39 p.m., the Attala County Fire Department, Zama Volunteers, and Providence Volunteers responded to a woods fire along a utility line near the intersection of Hwy 19 S and Hwy 14. About eight acres were burning when crews arrived. County firefighters contained one side of the fire while forestry crews were requested to assist with the remainder.

At 5:50 p.m., Attala County firefighters and Sallis Volunteers responded to a fire burning along a utility line right-of-way on Hwy 19 N near Attala Rd. 4215. The fire was contained to about a quarter of an acre.

At 6:25 p.m., firefighters were called to a woods fire on Attala Rd. 5220 after a power pole fell onto a tree, sparking a blaze that burned around one acre before being contained.

All of the fires were caused by trees coming into contact with power lines except for the trash fire. No injuries or structural damages were reported.

LOUISVILLE, Miss.–A man suspected in a shooting in Winston County was reported to be on the run.

Bobby White, Jr. is the suspect in a shooting in which a person was hurt, but had non-life-threatening injuries Thursday on Miller Ave. near Louisville.

When deputies approached they say White fired shots at them before taking off.

White is believed to be driving a 202 Chevy Equinox, with the license plate WNJ715. He’s described as a Black male, 5 ft. 6, 160 lbs.

McADAMS, Miss.–A fire was reported near McAdams Saturday morning around 11:15.

The woman who called the fire in said it was behind her house, which is on Sudduth Rd. She was concerned that it may spread.

Volunteer firefighters were dispatched from Central and Sallis fire stations.

Those firefighters reported the fire was moving through the woods and was possibly near some structures.

The fire was reported contained by 12:30.

The fire rekindled shortly after 2:30 and the Mississippi Forestry Commission was called in.

KOSCIUSKO, Miss.–A one-car wreck was reported early Saturday morning in Attala County, on Hwy. 35 north, ear Attala Rd. 3124.

A car flipped and hit a tree.

The call came in at 12:42 a.m. Volunteer firefighters were dispatched to the scene, as well as an ambulance.

The driver was reported to be out of the car. But, that person was hurt in the wreck.

A Tornado Watch has been issued for portions of this area including Attala, Holmes, Carroll, Montgomery and Choctaw counties until 11 pm and another Tornado Watch is in effect until 4 am Monday for other parts of the local area including Leake, Neshoba and Winston counties.

Much of Mississippi including this area remains under a Level-3 “enhanced” risk of severe storms tonight with damaging winds up to 70 miles an hour, hail and tornadoes possible.   After the storms, the winds will turn around and become northerly through Monday. A wind advisory is in effect.  Some snow showers will be possible in parts of central Mississippi including Attala, Leake and Holmes counties Monday morning.  Monday night, temperatures will plummet with most of the local area facing a Level-4 “extreme” hard freeze with lows in the low to mid 20s.

Few details were available about what happened. But, if you saw the smoke and red lights at KFC, that’s where the vehicle fire was reported.

It was unclear what kind of vehicle was on fire.
