The Men’s Ministry at First Baptist Church of Kosciusko will host a community Men’s Night event later this month featuring the hosts of the Hayden Alabama Podcast.

The event is scheduled for Sunday, March 22, beginning with a meal at 5:00 p.m. in the church gym.

Following the meal, attendees will move to the sanctuary at 6:00 p.m. for a program featuring the Southern storytellers behind the Hayden Alabama Podcast.

The Alabama-based podcast has developed a following on YouTube for sharing humorous, real-life stories rooted in Southern culture. Many of the stories focus on everyday experiences, often highlighting themes of faith, family, and life lessons.

Organizers say the event is designed as a night of fellowship and encouragement for men in the community. The program will feature storytelling and reflections from the podcast hosts.

The gathering is open to men from Kosciusko and Attala County, and organizers say attendees are welcome to bring friends and family members.

This part of central Mississippi will be under a Level-3 “enhanced” risk of severe storms Sunday night with damaging winds up to 70 miles an hour, hail and tornadoes possible.   The storms are expected to move through quickly after 8 pm.  Ahead of the storms Sunday, gusty southerly winds are forecast with sustained winds up to 25 miles an hour and gusts to 35.  After the storms, the winds will turn around and become northerly through Monday.  Monday night, temperatures will plummet with most of the local area facing a Level-4 “extreme” hard freeze with lows in the low to mid 20s.

Two people were injured in a one-vehicle crash Thursday afternoon on Hwy 19 S in Attala Wednesday, March 12 around 4:15 p.m.

Attala County deputies, Attala County Fire Department, EMS, and MS Hwy Patrol responded to the wreck.

Officials say two individuals were transported by ambulance to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. One person reportedly suffered broken bones, while the other sustained multiple cuts.

The cause of the crash is currently unknown. MHP is handling the investigation.

Has Mississippi’s flu season peaked for the last time? Maybe.  One thing’s for sure, flu cases, at least for now, continue their downward trend, dropping significantly for the second week in a row.  The Health Department’s latest numbers, for the week ending February 28th, show reports of 450 suspected flu cases across the state compared to more than 600 the week before and almost 900 the week before that.  It’s a flu rate of 3.4 per cent, the lowest since mid-January.  Two of the public health districts in this part of the state saw their flu rates cut in half with the district which includes Leake and Neshoba counties dropping to 2.3 per cent and the district which includes Winston and Choctaw falling to 3.6 per cent.  In the district which includes Attala, Holmes, Montgomery and Carroll counties and much of the Delta, the flu rate edged downward slightly, still at almost 8 per cent.  The CDC is now classifying flu activity in Mississippi as “low” with only six states having less flu than were are.   And we’re a lot better off than our neighboring states.  Arkansas is experiencing “moderate” flu and it’s still at “high” levels in Alabama, Tennessee and Louisiana.

Another nickel for a gallon of gas.  That’s how much the average price at the pumps has gone up in the last 24 hours.   AAA says the statewide average is now $3.16, the highest since October of 2023.  The auto club says prices have risen for 13 straight days representing an increase of more than 63 cents a gallon.

While this part of central Mississippi escaped the worst of Wednesday night’s weather, gusty winds which have been blowing in the wake of a cold front initially left thousands of local people without power.  The website ‘poweroutage.us’ is reporting fewer than 400 current outages in Attala County as of 3:30 Thursday afternoon, around 120 in Leake County and 24 in Holmes County.  Statewide, about 20,000 customers are without power, most of those in south Mississippi which was hit by possible tornadoes last night.  Lots of trees and power lines were blown down in Franklin, Pike, Lincoln, Lawrence, Jefferson Davis, Covington, Jones, Lamar and Forrest counties.   A roof was blown off a home in southern Forrest County, a car wash had its roof blown off in Bassfield and there’s some damage reported on the campus of Southwest Mississippi Community College in Summit where five trees fell on the school’s library.  One person was killed and three injured during the storms in Lawrence County.

The National Weather Service was planning to survey some of the damage Thursday to see if it was caused by tornadoes or straight-line winds.

The National Weather Service is clearing parts of this area from the risk of severe weather tonight.   But Neshoba, most of Leake and southern Winston counties are under a Level-1 “marginal” risk of isolated severe storms until around 9 pm.  A Level-2 “slight” risk remains posted for portions of east-central and south Mississippi including Meridian, Brookhaven and Hattiesburg.

Gusty winds are forecast late tonight into Thursday morning as a result of a cold front pushing through the state.
