Easy wins for three members of Mississippi’s congressional delegation in Tuesday’s primaries.  Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith got about 81 per cent of the vote in defeating her Republican challenger, Sarah Adlakha.   She’ll face Democrat Scott Colom in November.  Colom won his party’s nomination beating two other candidates.

Congressman Bennie Thompson collected 86 per cent of the vote against two Democratic challengers in the 2nd district.   In the Republican primary Ron Eller was leading Kevin Wilson in a race that hadn’t been called as of late Tuesday night.

Congressman Mike Ezell got 84 per cent of the vote to beat Sawyer Walters in the Republican primary in the 4th district.  Jeffrey Hulum won the Democratic nomination.

Mississippi’s two other congressmen, Republicans Trent Kelly and Michael Guest, were unopposed in the primaries.  Cliff Johnson will be Kelly’s Democratic opponent in November after winning Tuesday’s primary.

Students across Mississippi have until March 23, 2026, to submit entries for the 2026 College Savings Art Contest and compete for more than $8,000 in Mississippi Affordable College Savings (MACS) scholarships.

This year’s theme asks students to explore, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” through their original artwork.

The contest is open to all Mississippi students from PreK through 12th grade, including those in classrooms, after-school programs, or homeschooling. Scholarship prizes include:

First place: $1,000 MACS scholarship in each age group

Second place: $500 MACS scholarship in each age group

Third place: $250 MACS scholarship in each age group

Age categories are:

Pre-K – 2nd Grade

3rd – 5th Grades

6th – 8th Grades

9th – 12th Grades

Students in PreK through 2nd Grade should submit artwork using an official entry form. Students in 3rd through 12th Grades should submit an original 8.5” x 11” artwork in a medium of their choice.

In addition, the teacher with the most student entries will receive a $1,000 scholarship to support continued education, classroom supplies, and more.

A Kosciusko student recently had the opportunity to see state government up close while serving as a page for the Mississippi Senate at the Mississippi State Capitol.

Truett Berry of Kosciusko spent time at the Capitol assisting senators and staff as part of the Senate’s page program. Pages typically help run errands for lawmakers and staff while also observing the legislative process during the session.

During his visit, Truett was sponsored by Andy Berry and had the opportunity to meet with C. Delbert Hosemann Jr., who serves as Mississippi’s lieutenant governor and presides over the Senate.

Truett is the son of Kellie and Ryan Berry and attends Kosciusko High School.

Reflecting on the experience, Truett said he enjoyed getting a firsthand look at how state government operates.

“I loved being able to see something of how our state government works,” he said.

The Senate page program gives students from across Mississippi the opportunity to spend time at the Capitol during the legislative session, providing a closer look at the state’s lawmaking process

Mississippi voters are heading to the polls today, Tuesday, March 10, for the state’s primary elections. In Attala County, voters will cast ballots in two key races: U.S. Senate and U.S. House of Representatives.

Attala County is part of Mississippi’s 2nd Congressional District, meaning local voters will take part in party primaries that will determine which candidates advance to the November general election.

Voters are selecting party nominees for one of Mississippi’s seats in the United States Senate.

In the Republican primary, incumbent Cindy Hyde-Smith is seeking another term and is being challenged by Sarah Adlakha, a physician.

On the Democratic primary ballot, voters are choosing among Scott Colom, Albert R. Little, and Priscilla W. Till.

The winners of each party’s primary will advance to the general election in November.

In the race for Mississippi’s 2nd Congressional District, longtime incumbent Bennie G. Thompson faces two challengers in the Democratic primary: Evan Littleton Turnage and Pertis Herman Williams III.

On the Republican primary ballot, voters are choosing between Ron Eller and Kevin Wilson.

The winners from each party will move on to the general election later this year.

Polls are open today from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. across Mississippi.

If no candidate receives a majority of the vote in any race, a runoff election will be held April 7.

Voters who have questions about their polling location or registration status can check with the Mississippi Secretary of State’s Office.

Mississippi’s junior senator in Washington faces a challenge in one of the federal primary elections on the ballot today.   Cindy Hyde-Smith has served in the Senate since 2018 and is running against a doctor, Sarah Adlakha, in the Republican primary.   Three Democrats are seeking their party’s Senate nomination—District Attorney Scott Colom, Marine Corps veteran Albert Littell,          and Priscilla Williams-Till, founder of the Emmett Till Justice for Families Foundation.

Two of Mississippi’s congressmen have challengers in today’s primaries.   In the 2nd District, Bennie Thompson faces Evan Turnage and Pertis Williams for the Democratic nomination while Ron Eller and Kevin Wilson meet in the Republican primary.   And in the 4th District, incumbent Mike Ezell faces Sawyer Walters for the GOP nomination with the winner to take on Paul Blackman, Ryan Glover or Jeffrey Hulum, those candidates competing in the Democratic primary.

The only other contest on today’s ballot is in the 1st Congressional District where Kelvin Buck and Cliff Johnson seek the Democratic nomination and the right to take on Congressman Trent Kelly who is unopposed for the Republican nomination.

In the 3rd District, Congressman Michael Guest has no opposition in the Republican primary and his Democratic challenger, Michael Chiaradio, is also running unopposed in the other primary.

The polls will be open from 7 am until 7 pm.

The family of Jamie Elizabeth Sample (Edwards), 67, invites friends, former students, and community members to a Celebration of Life in her honor at the Frank B. Branch Coliseum on Saturday, March 14, 2026.

Mrs. Sample dedicated her life to education, serving 22 years in the Kosciusko Public School System as a beloved biology teacher. She later continued teaching biology at the Goodman and Ridgeland campuses of Holmes Community College.

Known for her patience, intelligence, and unwavering encouragement, she touched the lives of countless students, inspiring a love of learning and curiosity about the natural world.

A proud graduate of Clewiston High School and Delta State University, and holder of a Master of Science in Education from Mississippi State University, Mrs. Sample combined her passion for science with a deep faith, reminding her students that the beauty and complexity of the natural world reflected the hand of our Creator.

Her former students and colleagues are welcome to join the family in celebrating her remarkable life, sharing memories, and paying respects to a teacher whose impact will be remembered for generations.

Forms are also available at the Hugh Ellard Park office from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. A special Saturday registration will be held on March 14 from 8:00 a.m. to noon, which is the final deadline to sign up.

The cost is $80 per player, $160 for two players, or $215 for three or more.

A well-known artist from Kosciusko is being recognized in a national publication.

The New York Times recently highlighted the work of self-taught folk artist L.V. Hull in a feature about her colorful and unconventional creations.

Hull became known for transforming everyday items — including hats, lamps, appliances, and tools — into vibrant works of art using paint, glitter, and decorative materials. For years, visitors traveled to her Kosciusko home to see the artwork that filled nearly every space.

Hull passed away in 2008, but her work continues to gain recognition. A major exhibition titled “L.V. Hull: Love Is a Sensation” will open March 20 at the Mississippi Museum of Art, featuring hundreds of her pieces.

Her legacy will also be preserved locally, as her former home in Kosciusko is set to open to the public in May as the L.V. Hull Legacy Center.
