A well-known artist from Kosciusko is being recognized in a national publication.

The New York Times recently highlighted the work of self-taught folk artist L.V. Hull in a feature about her colorful and unconventional creations.

Hull became known for transforming everyday items — including hats, lamps, appliances, and tools — into vibrant works of art using paint, glitter, and decorative materials. For years, visitors traveled to her Kosciusko home to see the artwork that filled nearly every space.

Hull passed away in 2008, but her work continues to gain recognition. A major exhibition titled “L.V. Hull: Love Is a Sensation” will open March 20 at the Mississippi Museum of Art, featuring hundreds of her pieces.

Her legacy will also be preserved locally, as her former home in Kosciusko is set to open to the public in May as the L.V. Hull Legacy Center.

A community blood drive honoring the memory of Ruby Kate “Katie” McNeal will be held Saturday, March 14, in Kosciusko.

The drive will take place from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. at the Attala County Co-op, 447 Highway 12 East, and is being organized with Mississippi Blood Services.

According to organizers, the drive is being held to honor McNeal and to help replenish the blood supply that was used during her treatment following a vehicle accident late last year.

McNeal was hospitalized in the intensive care unit at the University of Mississippi Medical Center for approximately one month after the accident on Dec. 30, 2025. During that time, she underwent several surgeries and required significant blood transfusions, including 47 units of red blood cells, 26 units of fresh frozen plasma, and 14 units of platelets.

Although McNeal ultimately died from her injuries, organizers say the blood drive is a way to give back and help other patients in need.

All donors who participate in the drive will receive a $15 Visa gift card.

Those planning to donate are encouraged to eat within four hours before donating and drink plenty of fluids before and after their donation. Donors must be at least 17 years old, or 16 years old with signed parental consent.

Participants may also speed up the process by completing the donor history questionnaire in advance through the Mississippi Blood Services website.

Community members are encouraged to attend and support the effort, which organizers hope will help save lives while honoring McNeal’s memory.

Ethel High School senior Addison Stubbs has been named the school’s STAR Student for the 2025–2026 school year by the Mississippi Economic Council’s Mississippi Business Alliance Foundation.

Stubbs is among more than 300 students across Mississippi recognized for their academic achievements through the Student-Teacher Achievement Recognition (STAR) program. STAR Students are selected based on academic excellence, with both American College Test scores and scholastic averages considered in determining each school’s honoree.

As part of the program, each STAR Student selects a STAR Teacher — the educator who has made the greatest contribution to the student’s academic success.

Stubbs selected Mrs. Julie Harman as Ethel High School’s STAR Teacher.

For the first time since July 2024, the average price for gas in Mississippi has risen above $3 a gallon.   AAA says pump prices statewide have jumped more than 45 cents since last Monday, now averaging $3.005.   The auto club says the only states with an average price still below $3 are Kansas, Oklahoma, Missouri and Arkansas.

ETHEL, Miss.–A fire Saturday afternoon on Attala Rd. 5210 gave Attala County firefighters a busy afternoon, jumping several roads, including Attala Rd. 5232, and getting close to structures.

As some firefighters attempted tp knock the fire down, with the help of the Forestry Commission, fire engines were station at each of three structures to keep the fire from getting to them.

The effort to put the fire out went on for several hours.

Another Call

A fire was reported on Attala Rd. 2127, with electric lines on fire. At least one of the fire engines fighting the fire on Rd. 5210 went to fight that fire. That was at 3:20 p.m.

One of the power lines was reported down and Entergy was notified.

The fire was contained just before 4 p.m.

The severe storms which knocked down trees and left thousands of Mississippians without power Saturday will be followed by two more rounds of stormy weather Monday and Wednesday.   The National Weather Service has already placed much of the state including this area under a Level-2 “slight” risk for damaging winds and large hail Monday afternoon and evening as the frontal boundary which triggered Saturday’s storms moves back to the north as a warm front.  Then, on Wednesday, another cold front will bring more storms and a larger part of the state will be under a Level-2 risk.   Both storm systems could produce hail as big as golf balls and the Weather Service isn’t ruling out the possibility of tornadoes.

Regarding power outages from Saturday’s storms, 91 customers were reported without electricity in Leake County Sunday morning, with 19 outages in Holmes County and 15 in Attala County.
