As you've seen, Season 3 is dedicated to my father, Mike Jacox, who passed away late in 2021. I Love and miss you, Dad.
Today's guest, Brett Allen, teaches Freshmen English Literature and Junior IB Language and Literature in the Kent-Meridian Technology Academy. It is a project-based small learning community that integrates technology throughout the curriculum. For over 16 years, Brett has been coaching football and positively impacting the lives of young student-athletes. Recently, he resigned as the head coach of the football team at Kent-Meridian HS after seven years as the head coach to focus more on the family as his kids are getting busy with their activities. Brett is also an active member of his school's Equity Team and the Kent Educators of Color Network at the district level.
Today's discussion teaches how Brett was raised and his journey as a father. We reminisce about days at Central Washington University, where we were college teammates. One of my favorite parts of this conversation was discussing diversity and the impact that a recent book I read had on me (Raise a Fist, Take a Knee by John Feinstein). #powerful.
Brett also talked about getting the full story in any situation before we just react. We must listen, be present, and truly understand a problem before responding. Lastly, Brett also shared that we as Dads need to give ourselves grace as we are all on this journey together. To learn more about Brett, you can find him on LinkedIn or connect with him via email at [email protected]
