  • UK shapes the EU – both would be weaker apart
José Manuel Barroso, former Prime Minister of Portugal and President of the European Commission: the institution which attracts the ire of Eurosceptics. Is it too unaccountable and undemocratic? Does the EU want to control too much of our lives? The UK’s challenge and influence within the Eurozone has been significant, argues Mr Barroso, pointing out the UK shaped the Common Market, and successive UK governments favoured enlargement.

  • EU is a “failed state”
MP and Brexit campaigner Jacob Rees-Mogg tells Guy Foster, Brewin Dolphin’s head of research, that the European single market doesn’t benefit the UK. “We are in a sub-optimal economic arrangement that denies us democracy – this is a really bad situation to be in,” says Rees-Mogg in a Brewin podcast ahead of the UK’s vote on whether to leave the EU. He also responds to the fear that a vote for Brexit will trigger a period of uncertainty for the UK following the poll.

  • Helicopter Money
This weekend Switzerland will hold a referendum on whether the citizens should be entitled to receive a basic income of Sfr30,000 per year, even if they choose not to work. The motion is expected to be soundly defeated but that doesn’t mean that the debate will not be revived. One reason is that there remains a real possibility in the future that automation means economies creating fewer and fewer jobs leading to large scale unemployment. That’s another reason to believe that helicopter money, which is already being considered as a response to deflationary pressure and weak consumer demand could dovetail with the concept of basic income. Guy Foster and Ben Gutteridge explore these issues.

  • Fragmenting Unions
In the second podcast with Alex White of the Economist Intelligence Unit Guy Foster, Head of Research, widens the scope from a conversation which had been focussed on the Eurozone to look at the European Union and explore the potential impact on Europe of Britain voting to leave. We ask whether the UK will be a rule-taker or a rule-maker in the future in an increasingly globalised world. Not that it’s a fait accompli that the world keeps integrating so we ponder what the implications of the more isolationist tone of Donald Trump might be for the wider world.
