    Secret zoom hack.

Hi I'm Brian Pombo, welcome back to Brian J. Pombo Live.

Let's talk about zoom, shall we?

I have a lot of meetings that I have on zoom, sorry about the shaky camera work, I'll get it stable here. There we go.

I've got a lot of meetings I do on zoom. Most of them are one on one meetings with individuals but I have a number of meetings that I do with large groups of people, a lot of them that I don't even know. And here's a fun thing to do.

This comes in real handy if you're would normally go to something like a public meeting but this is now because of a certain situation, you may be stuck on zoom.

So a lot of mixers and things like that right now a lot of them are contained to zoom meetings. And so I go to a what they call a chamber of commerce meeting that's called greeters.

Sometimes they're called mixers, or that there are other terms for him. But it's the basic ideas that everyone has a chance to speak real quick about their business. And it's just a way to get to know everyone. And a lot of the stuff happens.

While before and after the meeting, it's getting to talk to everyone before and afterward, that's really where the magic happens, you don't have that on zoom.

So what you're left with is a little bit of chatter going on in the chatbox and you just kind of have to get bits and pieces here and there.

So here's a little hack that I've been able to come up with and it's extremely simple, and you may already be doing it. But if you're in a situation like this, here's what I recommend you do.

While it is going on, you either sit there with your phone, or another device connected to the internet and you're looking for the things that people are bringing up, or you're writing down their information, you're writing down their names, and the names of their businesses, so that you can then connect with them in other sources.

So I check LinkedIn, I check Facebook, I check Instagram, any other places that you think you could connect up with these people. And if in a situation like Chamber of Commerce, you're kind of expected to be able to meet and be able to connect and all these different places.

So it's not that big a deal, I throw out a connection on LinkedIn pretty easily out to these people, because they've already heard from me, so they know me from there, I know them from there, whether we've had a one on one conversation or not, I do try and connect with people.

If you're in a situation where you're not quite sure if they know who you are, and everything else, you could just say, Hey, I saw you in the meeting this morning. just figured I'd see if you'd be willing to connect here.

Or if you want to be friends or whatever, if you're talking to Instagram, and but places like Instagram places like Twitter, you can follow them without them having to follow you.

You're just tossing it out there you're putting, you're putting everything out there. But at least from that point forward, you can start to pay attention to them.

If I don't get somebody connecting with me on LinkedIn, I'll follow them, it's a very common way to be able to still connect with someone without them having to connect back with you.

Then you can learn more about them over time and start a conversation sometime later.

    Making friends and building relationships.

    How to make new friends.

Hi I'm Brian Pombo, welcome back to Brian J. Pombo Live.

A lot of what we do deals in business and the ideas of business, the tactics, strategies, and principles behind business, running a business, basically building a business to do what you want it to do for you and your life.

And today, I'm going to be talking about something that is very human and goes far across the lines. As far as business goes, the reason why I'm talking about it, is that getting to know more people, is what business is all about.

Business is about relationships, one of the top three pillars at BrianJPombo.com is being relationship reliant, and you just have to realize that all business is based on relationships.

If you get that part, then the real trick becomes, Okay, how do I make more relationships with the right type of people not know that there are the right and wrong type of people, but there are a right type of people that work well for you have a business relationship.

And there are people that are not and it's not a good thing or a bad thing?

    It's just how it is.

So, this question got asked online, and this question is usually asked by a particular type of person. So I have an answer if you're this particular type of person, what type of person asks, How do you meet new friends?

This is a person who does not naturally know how to meet new friends. And I was one of these people. Okay, how did I learn how to meet through friends?

Well, first, you got to realize why you don't know how to meet new friends, you don't know how to meet new friends, because you are not a natural people person, you are more task-oriented than people-oriented.

This is something that's been talked about a lot through personality theory, psychology, and so forth. What one of the main theories and personalities is called the DISC personality where you have a certain amount of each of these traits, these levels of traits, these four different areas of a trade quadrant.

And one of the areas that you're judged by is whether you're more people-oriented, or task-oriented.

Now there are some people that are right down the middle. And they're just as equally task and people-oriented. But most of us tend to be a little more one than the other. Sometimes we're better at one or the other.

It's not something that you're stuck in for your entire life, you can learn the skill of working with people, but you're naturally inclined toward one side or the other, usually, most of your life.

This is something I did not understand most of my childhood, I was always very outgoing, but very task-oriented.

So I can work with people and everything. But only when a task was associated with it, I'm a very, I got to have a project around, it's got to be work or a project, it's got to have a step by step process to it.

It's got to be something that I can sink my teeth into and when I have that I can make great friends with people and stuff that I learned through time.

Here's one of the things I used to do is just as an example, and maybe you'll relate somewhat to it, and maybe you won't. But to give you an idea, especially if you're more people-oriented, it's important that you know how task-oriented people think.

During a break at recess, I would find,

How to reconnect with old friends.

Hi I'm Brian Pombo, welcome back to Brian J. Pombo Live.

Today, this is an interesting topic and it's not directly related to business. But it all ties in, I found that nothing has ever really happened in my business without me having a friendship established first. And I know that's not the case for everybody.

But when it comes to great big leaps in my business, even before I was in business, when I was being employed, my best jobs and everything all came via a connection that I previously had, usually a friend.

To this day, I won't become a partner with somebody, unless we're friends for so I'm a business investor, it's one of the things, it's all about relationships, it really comes down to how well I know like and trust the person that I'm partnering up with more so even then the business that we're involved in or anything else because all those details can be fixed if you have a proper relationship with the people.

So that being said, one of the things I like to do, it's kind of a hobby on the side is I like to reconnect with old friends. And so I've got like, this is a beat-up old yearbook 1992. This was a great school yearbook.

This is just an example. This was sitting on top here because I was flipping through it and just flipping through and looking at not just the people in my class, I looked up every last one of them.

But I also like looking up teachers, especially the ones I got along with and so forth, and anyone else from the other classes that I think would possibly remember me and this is a fun thing that I like to do, I like to go on to Facebook, and LinkedIn, Instagram.

I like to see if these people are still around and see if they exist, see if they have any type of social media footprint whatsoever, then I try to be friends with them. And if I think that there's a chance that they may not remember me, I'll put a little note in it, especially it otherwise, if I think they, they probably remember me because we had enough of a connection.

I'll just toss it out there because I've had the same name I held on to my last name when I got married.

And so we, I it's, it's an uncommon last name, in most circles Pombo is so, I usually will just toss it out there and see what response I get back. Every once in a while, as I said, I'll come across somebody on a teacher or whatever, I don't know if they'll remember me or not.

So I'll toss on a little note and remind them, hey, I know this is weird. I haven't seen you in the last 30, 40 years, whatever it is, and I just figured I'd say hi.

And ask to connect on whatever social media it is. Unless you're on something like Instagram or Twitter that allows you to follow them.

Then you can see if they'll follow you back type of thing. But it's a fun exercise, I like to run through your books I like to run through old like membership, things, any type of lists that I have people if I can remember the person, I want to see if I can reconnect with them.

Because you just never know you never know where they're at. And I like I said this may be a business thing but it may be a personal thing to maybe there are some other interests that we have in common or something else that we can help each other out with in the future.

You never know what social media, the whole world has changed and it allows us to connect with people anywhere in the world.

The huge advantage behind, Relisten, Rewatch, and Reread.

Hi I'm Brian Pombo, welcome back to Brian J. Pombo Live.

I have two friends here, given giving you the idea of, there are certain ideas that we can't learn enough of, these are two books that I go back to, and I'm not a good reader.

I enjoy reading, but I'm not very fast at it and I have a difficult time keeping attention on things. But these are two that I can always go back to this one's called.

It's corny I know, but this is how to win friends and influence people. Very corny, written in a slightly older language.

I mean, the book is nearly 100 years old.

This is also an oldie but a goodie, how I raised myself for value failure to success in selling Frank Betcher, Dale Carnegie, two amazing books that the titles and everything would not really give you an idea of what you can get out of them.

These are two I go back to, and I haven't been going back to them as often. But there are two that I love so much that I do like returning back to them.

What I found, here's a quick tip for you, which I've had brought up before. But I don't always take my own advice right off the bat, oftentimes I need to hear it a couple of times.

So the advice is that if you have a really good book that you've read, read at once with your eyeballs, at least, and then go and get the audio version of it. And then just hold it, hold it on your phone, or download on your phone every once in a while and listen to it, I just recently got the audio versions of both of these and have been listening to it and have gotten so much out of it.

Just having it play in the background is such a huge, huge advantage. And there's a huge advantage to revisiting things that take you in the right direction, just say it that way.

So I was just recently, relisting, got something that's gonna fall right behind the camera, so I had to readjust it, there's a huge advantage be it, I was really listening to a speech that a mentor of mine, his name is Joe. And he was discussing this concept, how he's basically picked the same, I think he said three books, and has read a little of each one for the past three or four years, something like that.

And that he has gotten so much more out of that than trying to just run and read as many books as quickly as they can.

Because that's one of the things you fall into when you get back into reading. And most people don't.

But if you ever do get back into reading, people get into this idea that what I need to do is cram as many different books in my head and go through books as quickly as possible, and just glean everything I can and then run to the next one.

Whereas if you have a couple of books that are really solid, you ought to reread them and if you're not good at rereading them, you ought to relisten to them. Because you're going to get the information in again anyway, somehow find a way to get it back in there and to keep it recirculating.

Because good ideas don't go out of style. If it's a principle, it's going to last. And it doesn't matter whether it's a book, or whether it's a speech or something else that they get you going that is just something you listen to or whether it's something you watch, there's so much good stuff on.

There's a lot of crap, but there's a whole bunch of good stuff on YouTube and other places....

    Advertising advice and expectations.

Hi I'm Brian Pombo, welcome back to Brian J. Pombo Live.

I want to talk really about how to apply the principles that we've been talking about over this past week. All the last few videos and podcasts I put out had to do with a plot had to do with really the basic principles.

Now I want to take some of that and apply it and show you how so much comes down to both expectations and tracking. So first off, let's talk about expectations you have to know what you expect to get off of your advertising.

Otherwise, you can determine whether it was successful or not.

You can just wait and see what happens but if you're doing anything more than that at all in regards to either advertising or word of mouth or anything else, it sometimes it's tough to be able to track it and know where one started and the last one ended and to really know if it was worth your effort and money to do it.

So I'm going to give you an example that direct mails are a fun one because it's one of those that really can be tracked. And you can really good a good get a good idea as to whether it worked or not. Or my favorite things to send out as postcards.

Here's a postcard, this is from a local lady who's doing real estate and I don't get that many real estate postcards or letters or anything.

There are hundreds of it and probably close to 1000 Real Estate people that cover this area and it's a small area but there are tons of them there's everyone in their brother's a real estate person but very few of them advertise directly.

So I got to first off give her name is Suzie. Give Suzie props for putting this out now we're going to talk about what worked in this and we're going to talk about what didn't work but once again this has to do with expectations.

You know and whether you're tracking it if you're tracking it and you're getting back more than it was necessary to be able to constitute it working then you keep doing it you find a way to keep getting it out there or get it out to a broader audience or what have you.

I don't know why I was placed on the list but here it says thinking of selling your home.

Okay so there's the headline, it's not super clear yet. I'm not sure if you can read it from where you're at. It's not super bold white on a dark background doesn't do as well as a dark color or black on a white background.

The little picture of a teacup and some flowers, there's not a chair but there is a little watermark symbol.

I just happen to know that I believe this is dream time the website that you can purchase and if you don't purchase it there watermark stays on there so that's that doesn't look that hot. I've just noticed that now for the first time I didn't notice it the first time.

Not that that's going to deter whether people are interested or not but doesn't say anything about a home I mean obviously this is on the inside of a home but besides that, and it's a little beat up.

One of the letters fell off here but it says call for your complimentary market analysis. So that's the basic pitch that's what they're going for. They want you to make a phone call.

See what your home is worth today, John L Scott real estate. So this is the main site and then you've got the address side and the rest of the copy here which is interesting....

    Top effective advertising technique.

Hi I'm Brian Pombo, welcome back to Brian J. Pombo Live.

A lot of people are gonna wonder what is the top effective advertising technique?

I'm here to tell you if you're asking that question, you are asking the wrong question, which we talked about a couple of episodes ago, as we were discussing the difference between tactics, strategies, and principles.

Okay, tactics is another word for technique.

If you're looking for the top technique, you're going to find something that's changing on a daily basis. It's going to be very dependent upon your strategy upon the principle of who you're going after, and what you're wanting them to do.

The techniques are going to change when it comes to that, and they're not going to stay the same even for you there.

It's one thing that works today won't necessarily work tomorrow, or if it does work tomorrow, it won't work a week from now or a month from now or a year from now, there's no one thing that is going to win at all for you in terms of a technique.

But I've got good news for you.

There is a top strategy, there's so it's a little tricky. I'm being a little tricky with the title for today's show. There is a top strategy though, that top strategy is very, very, very simple and it's extremely difficult to get into our thick heads.

Because as business owners, and people that are executives running businesses, what we tend to do is we tend to look for what's going to work right now what's going to give us a shot in the arm right now, we don't care as much about the long term.

But if you're thinking long-term, there's one long-term strategy that will never run you the wrong way. As long as you know that it is what you're trying to do. What is the strategy, the strategy is testing?

That sounds extremely boring and sounds extremely academic. But testing is where what works over the long run. But you have to go into it, knowing that's what you're doing.

If you're going out there, and especially if you're in a new media form, let's say you've never done Facebook ads before. And you want to do it right now and you want to make them work well, what you got to do is plan on doing a lot over a long period of time.

Then you'll make the work testing is the only thing that is certain to work. You have to know what you're wanting to get out of it, though. I mean, this really goes back to previous episodes when we're talking.

This is a principle, even though we're talking about a strategy, this strategy is based on the principle is that if your focus is on testing, then you're always going to be able to come up with the right thing, just in the long run.

Because you're focused on the big picture, you're focused on where you're going in the long term, you will build techniques and strategies that will last you over the long haul, but they won't work sequentially.

So you'll come up with a really good technique, you'll come up with a really good hook, and a really good way to get attention. And that's going to work for a period of time and then it's going to stop working.

Now that doesn't mean that it's dead forever.

What it means is you can take that same idea, tried in a different media, trying a different media source, try or hold on to it,

  • The Marketing Triangle & Your Business 🛆 (Dan Kennedy)

Brian talks about Dan Kennedy's Marketing Triangle.

    Transcription

The marketing triangle and your business.

Hi I'm Brian Pombo, welcome back to Brian J. Pombo Live.

What is the marketing triangle and why is it so important?

It really matters, and it's going to mean a whole lot more to you if you've been involved in business for a period of time, basically, because it will show you why you've failed so many different things, or why things aren't working properly.

And it was funny because it took it was probably around 2013, 2012, late 2012, 2013, that it came to me and I'm like, Oh, I get it.

One of the big pieces was reading this book, the ultimate marketing plan by Dan Kennedy. Great book, he talks about the marketing triangle in here in great depth, I'm going to cover it in very light manner.

Just to give you an idea of what it is and why it's so important.

It really comes down to this. When you're in business, oftentimes, when it comes to marketing, we focus on the media source first, that tends to be the first thing goes to our mind.

The old saying was, you know, it's the Yellow Pages salesman that walks in through the door or calls you on the phone. And that's what leads you to getting into the Yellow Pages.

It's not because you thought about it, and you figured your market with the people you're trying to get to use the Yellow Pages, all this stuff, it's, we tend to be driven by the market.

So someone gets really excited about Facebook ads, or tik tok or anything like that. And then they say, Okay, now what am I going to put on there?

And then at the very end, they might get to the point where they say, Okay, now, what does my audience want. But that's, that's usually the last thing people think of.

Here's the magic of the of the marketing triangle, it should be the first thing we think of is our marketplace. Our who, so we talked about yesterday about the who and why that is so important.

Another word for who is market. We're wanting to focus on our market first. That should be the first thing that we think about is the who, who are we trying to help, right?

Who are we trying to help and what are we wanting them to do?

    How are we helping them?

And the how is the message, because you start with the market?

You say, Okay, this is who we're trying to reach.

Now, what are we trying to help them with?

How are we going to help them?

That's our message when it comes to marketing, because marketing is just the communication of what we want the market to do what we want potential customers, clients, patients, whatever, what do we want them to do?

    Right, that's marketing.

It's just the communication of it, and we'll get into that in a second. But so you got your message, your market, and then at the end, that will lead you to media.

What type of media do I go to with that message for that market?

See, if you do it that way then you don't get excited about the media source, except for the fact that it's a good way to deliver a message to the market.

But most of us, we do it all backwards and then we don't end up getting good results.

This happens only almost every single time.

  • Second Step In Goal Setting 🦶🦶 (Who Is Your Ideal Prospect?)

In a continued series on goal setting, Brian talks about identifying your "who" in terms of your ideal prospect.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UaQgGlQAavQ

    Transcription

    Second step in goal setting.

Hi I'm Brian Pombo, welcome back to Brian J. Pombo Live.

Yesterday we talked about really defining where you're going.

And, if I wasn't completely clear, let me clarify. Now, you really want to find what the end goal is what you're trying to reach in terms of actual things, and then bring it back to, an actual number. Then you know the amount of money that it's going to take to be able to achieve that and then the amount of time that you're looking to do it.

That's how you really do well at defining a goal.

Now, beyond that, if you're starting from absolute scratch, and like I said, I deal with two types of people, I deal with business owners that are already successful, and they're already moving forward, and they just need help over the next big hump and take things to the next level.

Then the second type of person I work with is a person who has never owned a business before, or is looking to get into an entirely new type of business, and is right at the very beginning of their journey, kind of the startup situation.

This may appeal this may be based on both people because most of the time when we get into business, we mess up, we don't do it right and we end up suffering along the way.

Sometimes we make it and sometimes we don't but when you're trying to go add it again, or trying to kind of restart your same business, even if you've been successful, sometimes you got to start back at basics.

So which is why I'm trying to handle a lot of these, these principles, and real basic ideas right now.

So we talked about the why.

And the next step also starts with WH.

What's the next step, the next step is WHO and it's WHO on every level?

First off, the most obvious who is going to be who you are going to have as your customer, as your marketplace. As your end person, who are you trying to reach?

Who are you trying to do something for?

You say, Well, I don't know,

I don't know what my product is, I don't know what my services.

Here's the thing, if you can figure out who you want to serve, who is going to be the easiest for you to serve who is going to get you to your goals the fastest.

Sometimes, just for example, if you're looking to make a lot of money over a period of time, oftentimes going to the person that has the money has a lot of money that they're willing to part with is going to get you there quicker.

I'm not saying that your market, but it might be let's just say for example, that that's your market?

Well, then you got to find out what are they willing to part with? What do they want more than they want their money?

If they've got money, you want it, you want it also, but they're going to want something in return.

The question is, what do they want to return, it's easier to model your entire business after a who, because a who never really changes in general, once you have that market, the idea of who you're going after, it's referred to as an avatar, oftentimes in marketing circles, because you can build out kind of a fake character with the roundabout the demographic.

    So demographic,

    Transcription

Where the heck are you going?

I am Brian Pombo, welcome back to Brian J. Pombo Live.

This is a series that we're doing on kind of the principles of building a business. And it's kind of a basic outline of the kind of where I start with people find out kind of where they're at, and then kind of take them where they're going.

So the question today is, where are you going?

If you own a business, if you're planning to own a business, the biggest question you can ask right now is, where are you going?

What are you planning to do next?

Yesterday, we talked a little bit about the Cash Flow Quadrant, okay, you go back and watch the video on that if you want.

But the whole idea is if you don't have a business that runs on its own, that you can walk away from it, where it's actually it's an actual asset, it's putting money into your pocket, not just pulling money out of it, you're getting more back from it than you're giving and you're not completely married to it, you don't have to be constantly shoving time back into it unless you want to grow it, but it has a sustainable flow to it.

It produces cash flow on a regular basis, either it does or it doesn't. If it doesn't, you might want to be getting there.

If you do want to get there, the real question is, how much money are you looking to make and how soon, are you looking to make it?

And from there, you could start to design where to go next. But the toughest thing for people to do is to actually figure out where they actually want to go, what do they actually want to occur?

If any, and the only way I know how to be able to handle this, if you've never done it before, is to really come up with a pie in the sky concept.

What are the most that you can imagine making personally?

And what is the best absolute way of doing it, you know, if it could be a passive income business that just produces for you, and doesn't take a whole lot of babysitting?

If you could have that, how, what's the least amount of time is no time. So let's say we're going with that, let's say we're saying it's not going to the amount of time I put it into it's negligible. And then how much money do I want it to kick off on a monthly basis.

That's where you ought to be focused on personal, look at your personal side first, even if you already own a business, even if it's relatively passive, you got to sit there and kind of think to yourself, okay, what's next?

    Where am I going next?

What's the next big goal and you got to look at that personally. Because then you can translate that back into your business, you have to know what you want out of it first. If you can't find what you want out of it, you shouldn't be in charge of that business.

Whether you're an executive, a business owner, you should not be running things. If you can't figure out how you tie into it, what you're getting back from it if that makes sense.

But it's tough, it's tough to do that.

It's tough to separate ourselves from all the details. But that's what you have to do first after you find out and besides the other things we've already discussed, after you've already kind of decided where you're at, you got to decide where you want to be.

And there's another term for this.

    Where are you financially?

Hi I'm Brian Pombo, welcome back to Brian J. Pombo Live.

This is a show and I apologize about my hair, I was wearing a baseball cap all day, and never quite got everything to lay back down. But it'll be my hair will be better tomorrow, okay.

So that what we like to talk about on this show is business concepts and ways to be able to use your business, to change your life and make it better and make it make other people's lives better because of it.

And so if you're thinking about that, the best thing to do is to always bring things back to principles.

Yesterday, I talked about the difference between principles, strategies and tactics, you can go back and watch that if you want to be caught up the day before that talking about kind of the primary fundamental principle necessary in order to move your life forward.

Especially if you're thinking in the business mindset. It's really the foundational principle of all of Western civilization, and so what brings that back up to today?

Well, I'm going to, I'm taking you on a little bit of a journey. When it comes to principles, I wanted to start off with some of these definitions. Because we got common vocabulary we can use, that we can get a whole lot further because these are, these are definitions and words that don't necessarily use this way you weren't taught them in school and the same function.

I'm taking great Liberty with some of these ideas. In fact, I've had people come back to me saying, well, that's not what common sense means and everything, it I'm using different definitions for college common words and phrases that you may have heard before, and using them in a very specific way.

So hopefully, we can talk about the definition, the meaning behind these things and not get caught up with the words that I'm using, because then everybody's going to define these things differently over time.

And nothing is more true than what I'm going to talk with you about today, and I've discussed this before, and you're probably already familiar with it, but it's a good thing to bring up again because I I'm always amazed how many people I run into that are not familiar with Robert Kiyosaki cashflow quadrant.

Now, why would I be bringing up this idea tonight, when it comes to principals, two main reasons.

One, we're going to talk about definitions and some words that we're going to be using over and over again, and we're going to be using them in a different way than you're probably used to.

Two, this is one of those things that if you're going to define where you're going, you need to know where you are.

And when it comes to business, we're talking about financial nature, initially, because it has to do with you as a person. Now, I work with two different types of people in my business.

One is a person that's a business owner that's been a business owner that's successful, that's moving forward, or an executive that is running the business.

They're moving forward, and they already have a successful business, but they're looking to take it to the next level.

The other type of person I talked to a lot is a person that's either hasn't owned a business or is looking to go into a new field, and is looking for the end result, and doesn't really know where to go next.
