Today Perry and Shawna are joined by Wayburn Dean, a Grammy and Dove award nominated Christian artist, former lead singer of the CCM group Acapella and founder of Inside Prison Ministries. Today we do some hard and beautiful work on the bridge out of racism. First Wayburn’s life started with the doctor telling Wayburn’s parents: “Your boy is not going to make it.” God had other plans.
Then Wayburn shares the pain he’s experienced because of his skin color. Next Wayburn talks about why in his words "black America has produced so many criminals" and what he’s doing about this tragic cycle. Next we talk about the Black Lives Matter movement. Then Wayburn gently responds to a listener who feels like our conversation about Black Lives Matter was dismissive of the pain she and other black Americans have experienced. Next we talk about how the gospel is THE answer to racism.
Then we brainstorm about what we might do at the front end of the cycle to keep black children from ending up in prison. Next a listener is struggling with "White Guilt," feeling condemned for being racist simply because he's a white male. It's a conversation about "White Guilt" from a Jesus following perspective. Then we ask Wayburn what he thinks about defunding the police. And finally we land with some thoughts about God's perspective on racism, which ultimately what needs to shape our thinking. In short, God created ONE human race in a beautiful kaleidoscope of colors!
