Nicolas Sassoon opens the Bright Moments London Collection with his “Waterfalls” show and this Q&A in which he dives into the inspiration behind his work, his process, and his views on digital art.
Starting with animated GIFs and inspired by the limitations of 1980s and 1990s computer graphics, Sassoon has one foot in the past while taking the concept of art as a “window” a step forward with modern technology in a physical space.
He shares insights into the concept of abstraction, use of motion in animation, overlapping textures, and the craftsmanship of digital tools.
Recorded June 30, 2022 in London
Questions from the Audience Q&A are not audible, so here they are:
Could you speak to your use of optical illusions?
Have you considered how immersion might work in the metaverse or virtual reality?
How do you narrow down the work to include in your collection?
Despite being abstract, does your work always come from an object or place?
How did you arrive at a 72-frame loop as the duration of your work?
How do you think about the definition of “generative art” or “generative artist”?
How do you view the physical exhibition of NFTs going forward?
