The Christian Doll Foundation was established to honour the memory of Christian Doll, who loved hockey and the camaraderie that came with it. Following his untimely passing in July 2024, his family and friends rallied together to create a foundation that would ensure that every child has the opportunity to participate in sports and other activities, regardless of financial barriers.

Christian's mother, Josie Doll, has shared her story of loss and the healing journey that led to the foundation's creation. Writing a book titled "Courage in the Corners" helped her process her grief and has provided solace to other parents facing similar situations. The foundation's inception is a reflection of Christian’s spirit, aiming to "set the tone" for future generations of children.

Community Involvement and Events
The community's response to Christian's passing has been overwhelming. Various fundraising events have taken place, including memorial hockey tournaments and an upcoming golf tournament. These events not only raise funds for the foundation but also bring people together to celebrate Christian's life and the values he embodied.

Memorial Hockey Tournament
The second annual Christian Doll Memorial Hockey Tournament saw a significant turnout, highlighting how sports can unite a community. Local hockey moms organized the tournament, and participants wore jerseys with Christian's sayings, creating a heartfelt atmosphere of remembrance. Families gathered to enjoy the game, share stories, and keep Christian's spirit alive.

Upcoming Golf Tournament
The foundation is gearing up for its first official fundraising event, a golf tournament scheduled for June 18. The event has already sold out, showcasing the community's dedication to supporting Christian's legacy. How Prairie Gleaners Is Tackling Food Waste and Supporting Communities
Prairie Gleaners is a nonprofit organization founded in 2006, officially starting operations in 2009. Their mission is to collect surplus and off-grade vegetables from local growers and suppliers, which would otherwise go to waste. These vegetables are processed into dehydrated meals, providing essential nutrition to those in need.

1. **Collecting Surplus Produce**: Every year, the organization collects vegetables that are still good but not suitable for sale due to visual imperfections. These include items like potatoes with minor nicks or carrots that are misshapen.
2. **Processing**: After collection, vegetables are cleaned, diced, and dehydrated. Ed explains that approximately 1,200 kilograms of raw vegetables can be processed in a single day, resulting in hundreds of bags of nutritious meals ready for distribution.
3. **Distribution**: The dehydrated meals are then shipped to various NGOs and nonprofit partners across the globe, including locations in Ukraine, Africa, and even Cuba. Prairie Gleaners works with these organizations to ensure that the food reaches those who need it most.

Volunteer Opportunities
Prairie Gleaners relies heavily on volunteers to help with various tasks, from sorting and cleaning vegetables to packing the final products. Ed mentions that they average about 31 volunteers a day, providing a vital workforce that keeps the operation running smoothly. 

- No Experience Needed: Anyone interested in volunteering can simply show up during their operating hours. It’s a great way to contribute to the cause without prior experience.
- Community Engagement: Volunteers often share that the experience is rewarding and enjoyable, helping them feel connected to the community and the mission.

The impact of Prairie Gleaners goes beyond just food distribution. By collecting surplus vegetables, they are actively reducing food waste, which helps the environment. Their dehydrated meals provide essential nutrients to communities facing food insecurity. Over the years, Prairie Gleaners has shipped products to over 52 countries, highlighting their commitment to helping those in need around the globe.

Medicine Hat College has been home to a comprehensive heavy equipment program for 17 years. The program graduates about 24 journey persons each year, equipping them with the skills needed to thrive in various industries.

According to Keon Clift, an instructor at the college, the curriculum is designed to build foundational knowledge over four years, allowing students to gain hands-on experience with the machinery they will operate in the field. This structured approach ensures that graduates are not only competent but also confident in their abilities.

For students like Coulter Kallenberger, a third-year apprentice, the decision to return to school was driven by a passion for the field. "It’s just what I like to do," he shares, emphasizing the importance of education in enhancing job opportunities and skillsets.

Brady Merrick, a journeyman who completed his schooling at Medicine Hat College, highlights the challenges of transitioning from fieldwork to classroom learning. However, he acknowledges that the theoretical knowledge gained is essential for long-term success in the industry. "The theory is still there," he notes, indicating that the college prepares students for real-world applications.

Participating in skills competitions is another way for students to apply what they’ve learned in a competitive environment. Coulter mentions how these experiences expose him to challenges he might not face in regular work, enhancing his problem-solving abilities. One of the significant initiatives she introduced was the "Bring Back the Music" program in partnership with Medicine Hat College. This program not only provided students with the opportunity to learn string instruments but also fostered parental involvement in the school. Engaging parents was crucial, as it created a supportive community around the students. Dr. Weeks recalls, "Seeing those kids with those string instruments and the confidence it gave them was really a wonderful opportunity."

Dr. Weeks believes that education should reflect the unique needs of each community. In her current role, she oversees a geographically vast school division that includes diverse communities, including Hutterite colonies. She highlights the importance of listening to these communities and tailoring educational experiences to their context. 

Innovative Programs for Rural Schools
As Prairie Rose School Division continues to evolve, Dr. Weeks is excited about new initiatives, including the upcoming Yuill School of Agriculture. This project aims to provide students with hands-on experience in agricultural practices, bridging the gap between rural education and practical skills. She notes, "We're thrilled about the Yuill Foundation's contributions, making ther project possible."
