  • Bring It On! – July 24, 2020: Federal Officers on U.S. City Streets (Special Edition)

Today on a special segment of Bring It On! hosts Clarence Boone and William Hosea welcome special guests Major General Craig Q. Timberlake (USMC, Retired) and  Joseph Hoffman, Harry Pratter Professor of Law at the Maurer School of Law at Indiana University Bloomington, to discuss primarily the unprecedented use of federal force taken by Donald Trump in recent weeks in Portland, OR and other cities.

In this special segment of Bring It On! General Major Timberlake and Professor Hoffman examine these recent events using their expertise and experience in military and legal affairs. They discuss Trump’s use of unidentified federal officers to detain protestors in Portland, OR, his increasingly unorthodox, sometimes disruptive and, arguably, increasingly combative relationship with the U.S. military, and his rogue approach to presidential precedences and traditions.

  • Bring It On! – July 20, 2020: Retired Major General Timberlake on U.S. Race Relations
Today’s hosts Clarence Boone and William Hosea spend the hour with Retired Major General Craig Q. “Lake” Timberlake, USMC. Major General Timberlake lends his perspective on recent events that some have called one of the most remarkable periods in U.S. civil-military relations in decades.

In the aftermath of unrest and protest about the killing of Goerge Floyd, Donald Trump has threatened to deploy regular, active-duty troops to confront American citizens protesting racial injustice in cities across the country. The civilian and military leadership of the US Department of Defense balked at the possibility of sending troops to the street.
Several retired officers spoke out against the proposition and in some cases, about Trump himself. For some watching, it looked like the American military had turned against the president. Major General Timberlake adds his voice to this discussion in today’s edition of Bring It On!

  • Bring It On! – July 13, 2020: Surviving Hate in Monroe County
The July 4th weekend of 2020 in Monroe County was fraught with seeming racial unrest. On Thursday, July 2, a Lawrence County sheriff’s deputy who resides in Monroe County questioned and detained a black Bloomington resident while he walked in his neighborhood in an apparent example of racial profiling. Then, most notably, on Saturday, July 4, a black man, Vauhxx Booker, was attacked by a group of white men at Lake Monroe claiming that he and his group of friends, who had gathered to watch to watch the lunar eclipse, were trespassing on private property and threatened then to “get a noose”. Sadly, the long holiday weekend was capped with another act of violence when Black Lives Matter demonstrators, gathered in response to Mr. Booker’s attack, were hit by a car on July 6.
The driver has since been apprehended and brought into custody. Bloomington Mayor John Hamilton expressed his outrage and grief over the racially motivated incidents that occurred last week. In a public statement, he wrote, “These separate incidents exemplify the persistence of racism and bias in our country and our own community!” Sadly, however, despite dozens of people witnessing the incident and multiple videos of the incident, as of yet, no arrests have been made regarding Mr. Booker’s attack. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), however, has announced an investigation into the attack on Mr. Booker.
Today Bring It On!’ will process these events. Hosts Clarence Boone and William Hosea speak with Vauhxx Booker, who is also the City of Bloomington Human Rights Commissioner. Joining Mr. Booker on the show is City of Bloomington Mayor John Hamilton, and Indiana Democratic Nominee for State Senate, Shelli Yoder.

  • Bring It On! – June 15, 2020: Bloomington’s Homeless and COVID-19

Today hosts Clarence Boone and William Hosea welcome Rv. Forrest Gilmore, Executive Director of Shalom Community Center, Ms. Amber Skoby, Executive Director of the Bloomington Housing Authority, and Nicole Johnson, a Crestmont resident and community advocate.

They discuss how Bloomington is trying to meet the challenge of serving the city’s homeless who are now having to deal with health precautions and new safety concerns brought forth by the COVID-19 pandemic. An isolation center for Bloomington’s homeless is scheduled to open next week at 300 W. Hillside Drive.

Four Monroe County organizations, Shalom Community Center, Wheeler Mission, New Hope Family Shelter and Middle Way House, are working together to create this shelter. Community Kitchen will help provide free meals. Forrest Gilmore, executive director of Shalom Community Center, said the center already partners with Community Kitchen to provide meals for people in need and this project is going beyond the resources they already provide.
